Subaru’s Design Chief Osamu Namba Explains the WRX Concept in Detail

The new design queues adopted by Subaru for their hunky WRX Concept had generated a wave of responses. And like usual, there will be two sides of either love or hate towards the new direction this iconic Subaru machine is heading to. But the aggressive looks the WRX Concept sports now does represents the aggressiveness that one would find in a WRX, and designing it to fit the image is not an easy feat.

To further understand Subaru’s new Concept, the brand’s design boss Osamu Namba himself steps up and explains the styling characteristics of the WRX Concept at the recent New York Auto Show. Starting off from the front, he explains that in order to keep the traditional Subaru looks, the hexagon grille are retained while the new hawk-eye headlights are more lengthy and protracted to imply stability.

One would also find that the WRX Concept still has the flared wheel arches, except that they had been revised with a modern design. The side outlet vents are still included like on any other WRX, and the overall profile gives out the hint that this concept was designed with speed and agility in mind.

Such properties could still be found when moving on to the rear, where the sharp edges imply pure speed, other than giving it a sharper look. And since Subarus are known for their low-center of gravity, the wide-profile tires properly portray such identity, coupled with the lower diffuser beneath the rear bumper.

The video of Namba himself giving a detailed rundown of the WRX Concept could be found below, and it is worth mentioning that with the Concept already looking this promising, the production version could definitely be a total stunner on the streets.
