The Nissan GT-R is an amazing piece of engineering. Not only it had met the expectations of the eager fans of the machine bearing this coveted badge, it is now instantly recognized as a budget supercar-killer. But do you know that the ones responsible in making the GT-R impressive engine only fall to four men? These Japanese guys are called “takumi”, a word that refers to a master craftsman who has unmatched skills after many years of hard work and dedication.
And you could find these “takumi”s putting their upmost attention and dedication into the infamous 545-horsepower twin-turbo V6 power plant at the Nissan engine factory in Yokohama. With a combined experience of over 100 years of work in their field, Takumi Kurosawa, Tsunemi Ooyama, Izumi Shioya and Nobumitsu Gozu are the only people that assemble the Godzilla’s heart by hand.
Each engine bears a plaque that proudly displays the name of the “takumi” craftsman who built it. Nissan also said that many had travelled thousands of kilometres from various parts of the world to the Yokohama plant, just to meet their engine builder. And one of those is the popular talk host and avid car collector Jay Leno.
In a world where technology had taken over most of the process in auto making, some things are meant to be given a human touch into it to make it special and individual. Watch the video below for a more in-depth insight of how these men put their skills into the famed GT-R engines.
