Though many of us dream of the day we’re able to experience speeds that are well beyond the limits of our own roads here in Malaysia; particularly the famous Autobahn and the infamous Nurburgring, and we do catch glimpses of those looking to emulate that experience locally on our very own Federal Highway at times.
Except for one of the very few who now has bragging rights over most in our neck of the woods; a certain Tan Seng Yaw, who managed to secure himself a once in a lifetime experience at the ‘Green Hell’ did it all. And by that we mean he’s even gotten himself some BMW Driver training in Germany itself as well as some time behind the wheel of a BMW M3 around the full course of the Green Hell!
Tan, was the winner of the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: The Sequel, and represented Malaysia with the chance to push a BMW M3 around the Nurburgring. Of course, such feats come with some form of formal briefing as well as training to ensure (up to a certain degree) you don’t go flying off the track like a bat out of hell.
The lucky guy managed to get behind the wheel of a BMW M3 for a full day and was instructed in the ways of a slalom exercise, emergency lane change, downhill corner emergency braking, drifting and pace car laps. But the highlight of the day wasn’t over, instead a taxi ride was organised for him as well as the other winners. After donning some race overalls and his helmet, Tan managed to ride with BMW DTM race car driver -Dirk Werner, who drive the the M5, pretty much side-ways most of the time as Tan recalled. And if things couldn’t get any better, he managed to experience it all over again, this time with Brizillian Augusto Farfus who is also with the BMW DTM Team.
The following day was crunch time with the skies beaming with sunshine, allowing Tan to push the M3 to the best of his abilities through high-speed corners surpassing 240kmh and managed to experience first hand as he sped through locations like Bergwerk (“The Mine”), Flugplatz (“Airport”), Caracciola Karussell (“The Carousel”), and Brünnchen (“Small Fountain”). But the best part is, he got to lap ‘The Ring’ a total of five times!
