VW expands Think Blue line-up; Touareg Diesel debuts in Malaysia!

Several weeks back, Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) launched the Touareg Hybrid on our shores as part of their environmental Think Blue concept here in Malaysia. Earlier today, yet another Touareg made its maiden appearance to the Malaysia public; this time in the form of a Touareg TDI. The Diesel, like its Hybrid sibling, is the first such model that VW has brought to the local automotive scene, and embraces elements of performance, durability, and comfort.

Volkswagen Group Malaysia Managing Director Mr Ricky Tay said, “We have seen remarkable success with this new Touareg TDI engine globally. The market share for this engine is more than 50% of total Touareg sales. We have a tradition of over 30 years of consistent success with this top of the line diesel engine. This new generation TDI diesel engine epitomizes modern technology at its very best.”

“Touareg TDI proves that diesel is now modern! Far removed from the common perception of diesel vehicles, the Touareg TDI not only performs well and is comfortable, but is different from the general understanding of diesel–powered vehicles. It runs on clean technology, is relatively quiet in comparison.”

Mr Tay said whether the Touareg TDI is your daily commute to work or one that you will use to pick up kids from school, an extended weekend away along the East Coast, or even as a practical everyday vehicle in the lush plantations in East Malaysia – the Touareg TDI is built to be a versatile drive.

The Touareg TDI is powered by an enhanced, improved and lighter version of VW’s solid 3.0-litre V6 diesel mill. Power figures are impressive: 245PS/550Nm and Zerotohundred in 7.6 seconds, onwards to a 220km/h terminal velocity. Its SUV credentials aren’t for show either because the car is capable of towing up to 3,493kgs. Despite those numbers, efficiency and consumption figures remain low: carbon emissions are a claimed 189g/km and combined consumption is said to be just 7.2-litres/100km. VW says the diesel powered Touareg is over 25 percent more efficient that petrol engines in its class.

Staying true to its premium SUV credentials, the interior clearly put together with high quality materials and has been laid out in typical VW fashion. There’s plenty of space for both front and rear occupants, with a massive 580 litres of cabin space. The rear seats can be folded flat for a maximum load of 1,642 litres. The Touareg TDI’s on-road and off-road prowess, paired with a cavernous interior, makes it a suitable vehicle for comfortable, long distance travel.

As testament to the Touareg TDI’s capabilities, VGM introduced Mr Rainer Zeitlow to give his testimony. Some of you might not remember the name, but Mr Zeitlow is the crazy Challenge4 adventurer who delivered a letter from Melbourne to St. Petersburg in a VW Touareg TDI; a journey that spanned 23,000km from Australia to Russia in 17 days and 18 hours.

Commenting on his expedition, Mr Zietlow said, “Crossing borders and continents through the most extreme and diverse climates and road conditions in a fairly demanding schedule was no doubt trying for us. It was by far one of our most challenging expedition ever. But the vehicle that we chose to ride in made all the difference.”

“The rugged Touareg TDI helped ease the journey and proved to be a remarkable performer, incomparable to any other SUV. It has long-range fuel efficiency and high performance, with durability that does not compromise on comfort. It was even a great tow vehicle. Completing this journey in just over 17 days was indeed a sweet victory!”

Prices for the Volkswagen Touareg TDI start from RM488,888 (OTR without insurance) with four colour options: Graciosa Brown, Cool Silver, Deep Black and Pure White.
