When we were at the Das Autoshow, and saw the unveiling of the new Beetle, the one question we had was “When will the two-litre arrive?”. Well, that time has arrived now, because Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) has just announced the launch of the Beetle 2.0 TSI.
The immediate differences are obvious; displacement has gone up to two-litres, with power and torque swelling significantly to 200PS and 280Nm respectively (up from 105PS/175Nm). The engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG box, and accelerates from Zerotohundred in 7.5 seconds; over 3 seconds quicker than its 1.2 TSI sibling.
A ‘Sport Line’ package comes as default, with the list of standard kit increasing appropriately. These additions include 18-inch ‘Twister’ design alloys, bi-xenons with DRLs (first ever for a Beetle!), panoramic sunroof, aluminium pedals, a 4-link rear suspension, a rear spoiler, sports suspension, twin tailpipes, XDS Extended Electronic Differential Locks, black mirror housings and interior ambient lighting and red-painted brake calipers. Also standard is the RCD510 infotainment system which features touchscreen, 6-disc CD changer, and SD card interface.
Volkswagen Group Malaysia Managing Director Mr Ricky Tay said that the introduction of The Beetle 2.0l TSI is part of offering choices to Malaysians, something that is at the core of Volkswagen‘s philosophy of producing ‘The Peoples’ Car’.
“This car would appeal to enthusiasts who want more from their Beetle. It has a more powerful engine, looks sportier and has added features and technological innovations,” he added.
Mr Tay said, “The Beetle was first seen on Malaysian roads back in the 50s and it soon became a popular choice among households. Malaysia and the Beetle have evolved together. The car is still a favourite among classic car enthusiasts and Beetle fans in the country.
“The last few months have seen us speak to numerous followers of the brand and the car, and we know that the Beetle is still a favourite among people. It is a car that transcends gender, class and background to become a favourite among people, thanks to its timeless shape and consistently evolving technology. The Beetle is truly the people’s car,“ he added.
The Beetle 2.0 TSI will be available in six fun palettes – Tornado Red, Saturn Yellow, Reflex Silver, Deep Black, Reef Blue and Oryx White, and is priced at RM219,888 (OTR, without insurance).
