Honda Considering a Return to Formula One

Back in the 60s, Honda was one of the big names in the Formula One game. Having such a good start however did not guarantee their chances of success as although the engine they supplied to teams like Lotus, Williams and McLaren in the 80s saw great achievements, their return in the 2005-2008 era did not really run that well along the way.

But that does not mean Honda had given up all hopes in making a comeback into Formula One as during a recent interview with UK’s Autocar, the head of Honda’s R&D Yoshiharu Yamamoto expressed his hopes for the brand to return into the sport anywhere in the near future and is aware of the massive commitment needed when doing so.

“On a personal level I love racing, but there is a lot involved when you are in F1 – it is the very top of auto racing and that requires a large commitment. But it is true that we do look up at those races and hope that one day we can take part again”, said Yamamoto.

And with the rules again set to change on 2014 where teams will be using a new turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, Yamamoto pointed out that this is a great opportunity for them to make a comeback since their World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Honda Civic will be powered by also a turbocharged 1.6-liter.

“This is my personal view – not that of Honda – but I feel the first thing we must do is win in the WTCC, and then perhaps we can look further afield”, he added.
