Problems with Ferrari’s F1 engines identified, team may ask for engine tweak permission

Ferrari may ask the FIA for permission to make changes to its formula one engine on the grounds of reliability.

Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport magazine on Thursday said the Italian team’s recent engine problems – including two failures for Fernando Alonso – have been identified.

Reportedly, the problem – which could cost Alonso grid places later this season if he runs through his allocation of eight engines – is with the pneumatic valves.

The report said too much air is escaping from the engine during the races, and because of the new regulations there is not enough time during the single pitstop to replenish the 2.4 litre V8s.

Auto Motor und Sport said that if Ferrari can prove to the FIA that the engine is suffering a general reliability flaw, it may be granted a temporary exemption from the ‘freeze’ on engine development.

The engines already used by Alonso and his teammate Felipe Massa, however, may not be altered.

i don't really remember when the last time this team got this type of problem..in many years, their engine are reliable enough..

This is unfair to other teams

So where do you draw the line. Next thing you know, another team will try to extract more performance out of the car by running a more aggressive map or reducing the radiator size a little, resulting in poorer reliability but better performance. Then they go to the FIA and request for 'reliability updates'. Presto they get the required reliability for the extra performance.

Unfair to other teams? 'Draw a line?'

The line is drawn when or if the teams themselves deem it fit to object Ferrari's request. Not when those outside FOTA/FIA raises what so far is a non-issue.

Let's not forget that despite this team's obvious status in the sport, they did (along other teams on the grid) let Renault tweak their engine - last season i think.

The FIA so far has shown greater impartiality this season under Todt, despite what everyone intially feared. If it is claimed otherwise, how is it that the Ferrari-style sidepod-mounted side mirrors, as also seen on the Red Bulls' - are banned from now on?

Let the sport be allowed to run itself in peace and see what happens.
