Leaked: Some information and images of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 race car

You have to love the internet, not only can you get anything online, it also brings you the latest of things you’re not supposed to see or know about yet. Like this Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 race car, these pictures you see here leaked to the world wide web and show the new super-Benz in full race trim, and the car is not due till next year!

The race SLS AMG features a heavily revised body which includes the front bumper with a large central intake and lower splitter, canard air foils, hood, fenders with deep wheel well vents, huge side sills, a massive carbon fiber wing integrated into the boot lid, fuel filler pocket in the quarter panels and rear bumper with a integrated functional diffuser.

As expected, the interior has been completely stripped and replaced with carbon fiber, even the seats and entire center console has been fitted with carbon fiber. In place of all the creature comforts like navigation and air conditioning, the SLS AMG has been fitted with a LED display instrument cluster, racing steering wheel, fire suppression system and a roll cage.

Details are still scarce on the SLS AMG GT3 racer but our sources are saying that it will have an unspecified power boost over the 563bhp of the standard model – somewhere around 600bhp is more plausible.

Not much is known but expect the new SLS to debut in the spring of 2011. Official details and high res images are expected to be released on the 27th of March 2010.

They don't know yet. I think they would approach it as they would the new Z4 GT3. It's unproven and the'd have to assess it properly as they would any new machine.

It's also more expensive then their current machine I think as this, like the new Z4 racer is a GT3 spec car while their existing Z4M Coupe GT is not. Neither are they obligated to use a Merc because of the F1 deal.

This is a GT3 car. Supposed to run in FIA GT races. Not Super GT. But it would not hurt to have one there.

why should all the hyper/super cars are being made as GT3 standard? i mean, yes if some of the fast cars of merc, bmw, ford, etc etc are going to race in gt3, but some exotics like this SLS, and McLaren's MP14, or that 1000hp bugatti should stay away from ridiculous racing.

i see almost all made, have their GT3 versions. why? is it GT3 the ultimate racing playground for each n every super/hyper cars made?

for me it doesnt look right. this beauty should be off racing and be driven gracefully. and fast.

GT3 is not the only GT class out there and certainly not the only class that automakers are focused on.

There is also the GT1, GT2 and GT4 classes. Maybe you're only familiar with GT3 because of publicity and also because of the famous 911 GT3 racer?

i agree on GT3 is being the most famous one. the other GT class out there feature as these hyper/super cars homo as well?

i guess its the publicity thing ;D

if a privateer bought a posh hyper/super car to run in the class, i can quite understand. but then when merc themselve or the manufacturers themselve got GT3 version of their vehicles, that makes me a bit.... boggled?

Yes they do, with regards to your question. It depends on what the base model (power) the racing version is based on. GT1 tend to be for hi powered cars like the Lambo Murcie etc. While the recent Lotus Evora racer is a GT4 I think.

Having said I think that this is not and announcement by Merc to go racing but rather an announcement that they have a car for sale for customer teams

I thought it's a great step as it's nice to be seen driving something that is built for the purpose of racing.

With more and more car being churned out for GT racing what we need to see are more homologation specials for racing....
Now that's a dieing breed.

Well A1Diablo, you did mention that Porsche is dominating a lot of GT races and even endurance races. So Porsche is the one to beat. So everyone make a GT3 car.

netmatrix,

Actually the 911 GT3, in various guise, race in various classes.

GT2 - GT3 RSR
GT3 - GT3R
GT4 - GT3RS

FIA's new for 2010 GT1 World Challenge feature no Porsches at the moment but who's to say what the future hold.http://gt1world.com/

GT3 now is an attractive class to manufacturers as the Euro Championship attracts Professional and Gentleman racers alike. And we all know who has the real spending power. http://gt3europe.com/

Back to the SLS GT3, race cars take away the purity of raod cars, by adding ductings, wings, splitters etc, but personally I think they make the cars more purposeful, and faster looking hehe.
