The Marketplace: Budget 4WD 6-speed super-ish car? Try ’96 GTO

dsc00005

The Mitsubishi GTO has always been an eye candy to many, especially because of its long wheelbased supercar stance. Coupled with Mitsubishi’s legendary all wheel drive and a formidable 3-litre twin turbo V6, the GTO was indeed a supercar edging machine on paper. What makes this particular example so special? Simply because of if being the late model, in fact, probably the last of them at 1996, facelift, fixed headlights and the sweet manual 6 speed transmission.

Its pimp! Who cares if the car is overweight when it looks like that.

Aftermarket? Most turbos are interchangeable same with engine management.

Maybe in terms of body parts then the aftermarket isn't that great.

Sorry if this sounds like bad publicity, but a motoring enthusiast once told me that the 4 wheel steering system on these cars could malfunction if not checked or maintained properly. And sometimes these systems malfunction with catastrophic results (i.e. crash).

Is this true?

In Malaysia not many have the expertise or knowledge about 4 wheel steering since they are quite rare. Besides the Preludes, and Skyline GTRs.

I thought they removed all that stuff for the 96 onwards GTOs. Apparently the GTOs weren't selling like hot cakes mostly due to the fact that Supras, Skylines and to a lesser extent 300ZXs were more bang for your buck.

So in an effort to lower costs they remove most of the technology on the car such as 4ws, adaptable aerodynamics etc etc.

Too lazy to check wikipedia again but that's where i read that information.

The last GTO batch was the Mk3 and was sold in japan in the year 2000 (other markets like the usa and europe/uk, badged the 3000GT, its last year of sale was 1999). I'm currently running a jdm 1993 mk1 GTO twinturbo myself (just tracked it in sepang last sunday haha 18th May), and i get most parts from the usa or uk because mitsubishi sold more GTOs / 3000GTs there than in Japan. They have around 4 variants in the usa, from front wheel drive NA auto or manual, spyder (retractable roof), sohc NA, and twinturbo AWD VR-4 models. It is very underrated here, the closest place in southeast asia with a big GTO community is in Thailand, and they are pioneers for widebody custom conversions for this car. Performance wise it is also underrated (my stock boost is at 0.4bar only, but the 5 speed gearing lets me hit 180kmh in 3rd gear). Its got a rear LSD, middle viscous coupling, and a diff for the fronts (VR-4: viscous realtime 4wd). Claimed 0-100kmh time was 5.4 seconds (only 0.4bar remember). There are a lot of 800bhp - 1400bhp monster GTO's out there in the usa and uk (current fastest street one ran 8.6secs quartermile), and in japan the sole specialist tuner developing this platform is Pit Road M. After owning and rebuilding one for 3 years already i can say the misconceptions about this car are just coming from people who misunderstand it and do not know where to look for parts (definitely not in Malaysia, the uk and usa shops get brand new oem parts straight from MMC japan and sell it at affordable prices as well)
