Renderings can sometimes be misleading if done by unreliable sources, some may be good but end up being worlds apart from the real thing. Lesson? Don’t trust renderings unless they are credible! These renderings are from a Slovenian website called ‘Avtomanija’ (AutoManiac anybody?) who published these photos of what could be the prototype version of the upcoming Mclaren F2 supercar scheduled to debut sometime in 2010.
Mclaren’s replacement for the legendary and to some, the best supercar ever made, is a pure-bred two seater compared to the three seater layout of the original F1. It will be based on the P8 that we reported on a few months ago; a mid-engined project that was initially co-developed by Mclaren and Mercedes as a smaller and cheaper successor to the SLR but the plan was dumped by the Germans in 2004. Details are scarce and what little there is I don’t believe.
Rumour has it that the F2 will be powered by a mid-mounted V8 engine from Mercedes’ AMG division. But didn’t the relationship between Mclaren and Mercedes to build road cars go sour? They went their separate ways, and from what I know, Mclaren still doesn’t have a partner and Mercedes is purported to be working with Aston Martin on sharing parts, engines, and maybe even develop a new car altogether, so don’t trust the rumours. As for the design, it definately pays homage to the original Mclaren F1, so there could be some cues retained for the real car.
