Carbon Fiber To Cost More Thanks To Price of Crude Oil

20307250011mThere is no stopping the catastrophic chain reaction of the high cost of goods these day. Started by George W.Bush and his war on Iraq, sorry I meant terror, now even the cost of carbon fiber is rising. Apparently two of the world’s largest suppliers of carbon fiber are in the process of raising their cost to manufacture what is already an expensive material. The reason being largely due to the higher cost of crude oil which just happens to be a key component to manufacture carbon fiber.

Toray Industries, the largest manufacturer is expecting a rise of 10-20% while the third largest producer Mitsubishi Rayon expects the raise to be in the regions of 20-30%. The second largest manufacturer of CF has yet to announce its own price hike but that’s expected to happen in the next one week.

Beginning August, the price of CF will increase from RM16 to RM18 per kg*. Key industries that will be affected by this increase are Formula 1 racing, other forms of motor racing, performance car builders, your local tuning shop and others that are heavily reliant on carbon fiber.

It seems inevitable that the introduction of carbon fiber by automakers for the mass market will have to take the back seat for the moment but what’s really disturbing is that if the price maintains its current
trend then these extra costs would have to borne by us, the consumer.

Still thinking of that carbon fiber hood? Better get it now before it goes double on you.

For me i'm not banking on CF parts unless i truely race. For a street car FRP is still the poor mans choice for lightweight body parts. The main difference is carbon fibre has good heat resistance.
