BMW Confirms It’s Currently Working On Its First Electric City Car

electricbmwFuel-efficient city cars are all the rage at R&D and design departments of almost every automaker in the world, bar Ferrari and others in its league of course. It’s not surprising though as that’s exactly what the world needs and is calling out for. Among those to answer the call is BMW. CEO Norbert Reithofer has confirmed that the German giant is currently working on a ‘mega city car’ that will carry a all-new look to the current BMW line up, and will be offered in two very different powertrains.

BMW will be building two versions of their all-new micro car, one will feature a standard combustion system while the other will be powered solely by electric. The electric BMW, will comply with a Californian mandate calling for fuel cell or battery-powered cars that can travel over 300km on a single charge. The mandate will only come into effect in 2012 but BMW has shown the world that it’s very possible, even with today’s standards. For comparison sake, Chevrolet promises at least 65km for its Volt and Mitsubishi is claiming that its iMiEV will be capable of covering over 40km/L.

There was no mention on which of BMWs three brands would be used for the new vehicle, but don’t count on it being a Rolls Royce.
