Taking the event to a new level, the 2006 Japan GT Championship Malaysia will be aggresively promoted by Sepang International Circuit to grow as prominent as the Formula One race for Malaysia.

Announcing this today, Sepang Intenational Circuit General Manager Datuk Ahmad Mustafa said the event could provide similar impact for Malaysia in terms of returns from flow of international tourists and tourism returns,
"Like Formula One, the Japan GT Championship Malaysia is an agenda to promote tourism as well as being a vehicle to develop motorsports in Malaysia," he said at the official media launch of Japan GT Championship Malaysia 2006 at Equatorial Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

"We are looking at international exposure for Malaysia as well as arrival of foreign tourists especially for the neighbouring Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan," he added.
Jointly organised by Sepang International Circuit and the Japan GT Association since the turn of the millennium with the Japan GT Festival in Malaysia 2000 as an experimental showcase, the event moved to a higher level after it was promoted into a championship round in 2002.
Since then it had become SIC’s second biggest event after the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix with an average attendance of over 40,000 for the race. For 2006, SIC is expecting an even bigger attendance with the additional attractions to the event.

"I am proud to announce that this year will be the biggest Japan GT Championship Malaysia to be staged in Sepang. This is in view of the support races that will be run together with the Super GT race."
"Apart from the international Formula V6 Asia, Formula Renault and the Hong Kong Gates Classic Car Series, we will also have championships under the Malaysian Super Series – the Supercar Championship, Supersaloon, Supersixteen, the sub-1000cc Super Compact Championship as well as the new JPM Integra Cup Malaysia," he said.
Modeled from the famous Japanese Integra Cup Series, the new Malaysian championship will be making its debut at the upcoming Round 2 of the Malaysian Super Series at the end of this month with the Japan GT Championship will be featuring the second round of the series.

Featuring one make Honda Integra machines, the series will feature top Malaysian drivers including the Fauzy brothers – Ferhan, Fairuz and Farriz, Faizal Hakimi, Tengku Hamman and 2004 supercar champion Adam Azman.
The Super GT at Sepang will be Round 4 of the 2006 series, which will travel to eight circuits around Japan as well as the Malaysian Formula One track before crowning champions for the year.

In his speech, Japan GT Association chairman Kunitmitsu Takahashi said a total of 35 cars and 79 drivers would be taking part in the race in Sepang, adding that he was expecting another close battle.
"Every year we have the opportunity of enjoying a legendary race under the hot and tough temperatures of Malaysia . I can assure you that in the coming round in Sepang, we will have the chance to enjoy another fantastic race," said Kunimitsu

At the ceremony, SIC also introduced the official GT Babes for the event. Specially flown from Japan, Kaoru Sumiya, Aki Oguchi and Hisami Asakura will be attending all promotional events for the 2006.

SIC also announced a special lucky draw to be conducted for ticket purchasers where they can win a 1.8 Nismo Version Nissan Sentra priced at RM107,000 as the grand prize.
Presented by Edaran Tan Chong Motors, the 2006 Japan GT Championship Malaysia is supported by Equatorial Hotel (Official Hotel), Puma (Official Apparel), Sony (Official Car Audio System), Excel (Official Beverage) and RTM as the Host Broadcaster.
