All auto manufacturers have their own special trademark that makes them unique from the others. Subaru for example is famed for its burbling Boxer engine, and Porsches will always have that evergreen styling feature that is somehow still acceptable in the eyes of today, even though it does not have that much difference from the ones back in the 60’s. These features are still with them today, and it is what gave them an identity that none other has.

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rx7_savanna.jpg"><img title="rx7_savanna" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rx7_savanna-600x474.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="474" /></a>

Unfortunately for Mazda, they had just lost one of their iconic trademarks that had made them stand out from the others. On 22nd June 2012, they bid goodbye to the famous rotary engine as the last of its kind rolled out from the assembly line after being produced by them since 1967. To be precise, the assembly line that made the RX-8’s Renesis engines was idled, and there are no plans for the moment in having it to restart its production.

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rx8_r3.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-32723" title="rx8_r3" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/rx8_r3-600x399.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="399" /></a>

<a href="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/renesis.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-32720" title="renesis" src="http://www.zerotohundred.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/renesis-600x399.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="399" /></a>

It was a challenge for Mazda to keep on using the rotary engine as it does come with high fuel consumption and poor emissions. Even so, Mazda has been working hard in solving/reducing the matters, and there were even some rumors that they are developing a new type of rotary engine called the 16X. Of course, such rumors are immediately squashed with this devastating news, and it will probably need a miracle for this small yet powerful powerplant to make a comeback into the motoring world.

hmmmm another legend is gone... First 2JZE, then 4AGE (Blacktop and Silvertop), now Rotary engine... next??? Hopefully SR20DETT and RB26DETT will be around for sometime....

I think all the manufacturer are more concern on cost cutting, hence ceasing all the legendary engine... and producing more economic engines and cars....

Sigh... sad news for cars enthusiast

Fuel powered cars have entering the beginning of their phrase out era. After the electric powered car development is matured, hybrid eventually will face the same faith. Just like the walkman and VCR player. So don't blame me for revving all over the place like there is no more tomorrow

Sad news indeed. Next would be high revving NA cars, replaced by efficient turbocharged engines. Proof? Honda's not producing Type Rs, new M3 is turbocharged.....only Ferrari is adamant in NA V10s and V12s..Who woulde've thought, soon NA is for rich people only.

That's backwards actually. F1 is going down the turbocharged route because most car makers are turbocharging their cars. It keeps F1 racing relevant in terms of technology i.e for real world application. Turbo's are popular now because of tight emissions control. A 1.6 liter engine is comparable to a NA 2.0 liter engine in terms of power but less weight, ore efficient and can be cleaner too. As for new Enzogoing for turbos, that's news to me. I do recall Di Montezolo saying he wants to keep NA V12s for their ultra cars because it's a significant part of their identity.

LIGHTENING FLYWHEELS - AN EXERCISE IN ROTATIONAL DYNAMICS
When the flywheel of a car is lightened it can have a great effect on acceleration - much more than just the weight saving as a proportion of the total vehicle weight would account for. This is because rotating components store rotational energy as well as having to be accelerated in a linear direction along with the rest of the car's mass. The faster a component rotates, the greater the...
