First post here.

I've got a 1987 Hyundai Pony (Canadian model). It was abandoned at an impound yard. I've looked around for other Ponys for sale to guess the price of this one. There are not so many left. In four months I have seen two sold in Canada. First one junk went for CAD$300, second one in good condition for CAD$2000. There are more ads from people looking for a Pony than from people who have one for sale. I bought this one from the impound. Cheap.

Mechanical:
  • Mitsu 4G32 engine.
  • Carburated
  • manual choke
  • 3 speed auto transmission

Stuff that is wrong or broken:
  • Front right tire does not hold air -- it must be re-filled every three days.
  • The window is missing from the driver's side door.
  • The ignition is broken.
  • There is a button installed in the dashboard. Push button to start. (My friend wants to remove button and install a pull-start cord from an old outboard boat motor).
  • Hatchback slams shut (supports not working)
  • Vinyl inside has cracks, cuts, holes, burns, and stains.
  • Top of shift handle is missing.
  • Driver's side door handles are broken on the inside (front and back).
  • Some surface rust but not too bad considering it is a Pony. Will require aggressive treatment.
  • Floor pans are rusted through beneath rear seats.
  • Paint is very faded and scratched. Small dents all over, especially on the hood.
  • No hubcaps
  • Spare tire has wrong bolt pattern -- won't fit.

So far have changed oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, transmission fluid, transmission filter, and battery. It runs hot but it runs. I have been driving it all week.

I am amazed this old piece of junk has lasted 22 years. Ponys are famous for rust. Some had rust at the dealers' lots. It has been fun to drive. It is so simple a lawnmower-style pull starter would not look out of place.

Overheating is not a problem when it is + 10C outside, and it makes the heater work very nicely. Heater is important when there is no window.

Had to learn the choke otherwise won't start.
Had to remember how to start carburated car (don't flood it).
Had to remember how to steer a car with no power steering

Can start easy now. Can pass basic road-side safety inspection too.

Next step is basic overhaul:
Steel rims and snow tires and sandbags in the back for traction.
Fix the window. Too cold here for no window.
Distributor cap & rotor
Gasket Kit
Spark Pugs & tune-up

When the Pony is ready I will take my daily driver off the road for an overhaul. When that is done I will tear the Pony down to the frame and rebuild it.

I might post some photos later.

I have three such cars, an 87 1600 4spd (tuned w/rochester carb, cam, headders, full exhaust), a 1986 1400GL 5spd (totally stock, grandma fresh with 70,000 Km, some rust here and there - winter car) and my project 1984 1600GLS (currently awaiting a 4G64 - 2.4L DOHC weber fed swap)

I also have a 1987 Stellar CXL loaded (HID, 15" Escort EXP rims, automatic)

Naturally, I have aquiered a large base of interchange parts for it, up to and including doors, hatches, seats, interior trim (mostly the older gray on gray, some blue stuff like handles, door pullers, instrument clusters (there were 4 types, stock radios, panels, etc) so if you're looking for parts, I can at least guarantee I have a driver's side window, points for the ignition, entire distributors (if your car hesitates or bucks, it's most likely the breaker point cam inside the dist), coils, carburetors, heads, valves (some modified)

Let me know if you need anything. You can still get pretty rust-free stuff from wreckers. Holes in the floor have happened to all but ONE (the 1984 project) of my Ponys (I've had 10)

Here's a link to the 1987 1600

Here's my winter car:

And here's my stellar 2.0

Anyways, let me know if you need parts

Woohoo! Parts!

Those are nice. Especially the summer car.

Mine does buck and hesitate a little. It also won't start once in a while unless I pull the distributor cap off and lift the rotor 1/16" with my fingers. I ordered a new distributor cap and rotor online, along with the thingys that keep the hatchback open.

I've installed a new battery and have new spark plugs (not installed yet).

I have 13" steel rims with snow tires waiting for me at crappy tire. I can pick them up in an hour or so. 155/80/13 is a bit narrower than the 165s on now but I can't get 165s in a snow tire. They don't make them.

Bob & John's import wreckers in Cobble Hill should have the glass in from Nanaimo tomorrow. They also have a starter and two left side tail-light assemblies (I bought the third). Some idiot shot mine with a pellet gun.

I visited the Duncan Hyundai, which is where this car was sold. It was worth the purchase price. I had four guys staring out the windows at me before I finished parking it. Two came out in time to hear it run on and wheeze as I turned it off. lol. One found gaskets for the carburator so it can be cleaned out and reassembled.

I now have a drivable winter car. It's insured for three months, by which time I should have my truck back on the road. I'll tell you it's a lot easier working on the Pony than it is on a 3/4 ton diesel truck.

I've never owned a vehicle this small. Holy crap is it ever fun. The wife was making fun of me last night 'cause I'll take any excuse to go for a spin.

So far as interior parts go, I'm missing the interior door handles on the driver's side (front and back) as well as the knob off the gear shift (There's a sharp white plastic spike I have to push down). There is also a gaping hole where the radio used to be. Does anyone know what make / model the stock radio was?

I've found lots of mods for the 4G32 including fuel injection and turbo but I'm not sure I want that. For the moment I'm keeping it as bone stock as I can manage.

Hah, I have MANY taillights and things of that nature. What I don't have is the "T" handle, as the only Pony I ever owned that was automatic was quickly converted to manual (the other torn up for parts) YOu can adapt a press down unit from a Jbody, i've seen this done.

let me know what parts you need, i'll open my vast parts room. If the car still hestiates and "bucks" you'll need a new carb, or a distributor cam (as the main metering system is jammed - happens over time)

I have a few carbs and distributors, as well as little parts here and there. Let me know what you want, I won't charge too much as I have a large surplus of distributors (i can even send you a pre-gapped one) and a fair bit of carbs.

If you do manage to get a passenger side mirror, i'll consider free shipping or we can work a deal out!

Also, if you ever get rid of it, I will pay you $$$ for the automatic trans bellhousing adaptor... with it, I can adapt GM transmissions to handle the power of my DOHC 2.4L!

Arrrgh!

My new 13" rims have a 4.5" bolt pattern.

I'm guessing it should be 4.25"

The rims are whatever ford uses.

As for the stereo, left and right sides have common grounds, so if you're going to do that common ground setup on a modern deck, grounding the left + right channels will cause problems with the fader + balance controls (IE you won't be able to use them, the deck will short out)

What I do is run different wires under the centre console, slip them under the carpeting, under the seat (2 bolts remove the bench) and then up the respected pillars into the holes (to the back speakers) and reuse the stock front wires, cutting off the lead + wire for the rear right and left.

If you need, I can provide a stock diagram for it (I have several manuals) as well as a stock deck if the plug is still in place. I also have the ETR deck from the Stellar CXL (auto tape loading, seek FF, electronic tuning) but it requires mild re-wiring.

Where did you get the rear struts from, and how much? I need like, 2 pairs...

I scraped down and re-painted four rims today. I got them at a wrecker, and three are 13 x 4.5 (standard for my Pony) and one is 13 x 5.5.

Did Hyundai ever make a Pony with a 5.5" wide rim? It is identical to the other rims in every respect but its width.

Bump with some old pics taken June 15th, before I bought it.

Bump: More pictures

Bump: 5 more pictures

Bump: One last pic. Broken door handle.

That's a fine Pony2 you got there. My dad had his Pony MK1 for 20 years before it was sent to Car Heaven Up There. Sad to see her go. Her last paintjob was Hyundai Bright Aqua, gives a tint of 3D effect of Greenish blue.

Thanks. That one wound up being stripped of parts and going to the wreckers. I bought a second Pony2 a year later with a better body. It is now parked in the desert in Lytton, BC with all the parts it can hold and then some. Inner tie rods were very hard to find. I suspect they may soon be unobtainable.

Let me share with you a short history. The Pony and Pony2 were designed to resemble The Afa Romeo, i.e. Alfasud and Alfa 33 respectively. See its slight resemblance done by Giugiaro. Do some slight modifications on your ride. Ideally plant in a 4G63 engine from an '82 Lancer EX & complete the cosmetics with a set of 14"/ 15" Watanabe rims. Sweet!

Hey all,

I am just about to buy an 86 pony in amazing shape. It hasn't run in a while though. it's got 55000 kms on it, no rust, a little damage to the door trim. Near as I can tell it needs a master cylinder, maybe a distributor, and possibly a catalytic converter.

I noticed scanning through the web-board some of you have lots of spare parts around for these and appear to be from BC... I'm in Vancouver, any chance you'd wanna sell me a pregapped distributor? And maybe a cat. converter too? And possibly an O2 sensor... I have to get it through air care. My mother-in-law will be the primary driver and she needs something reliable so this is likely it.

Cheers,
g

p.s. a used service manual would be good too.
