Need to especially check the cracks on the inner sidewall because that side is often overlooked/not seen. On top of that, the inner side never gets cleaned/oiled with tire cleaner so it tends to be more brittle. If we only check the outer side, often it looks not as bad and give misleading impression that the tire is still ok while in fact the inner side is already cracking. What happened to mine last time were mostly on the inner sidewall.

I dunno about the XM2. But my old Achilles tyre had a treadwear of 340 or something along those lines. Used for about 3 years and the thread had a good 70%. Driving in City only and almost daily.

Finally one day during CNY driving along the NS highway one tyre exploded when I drove over some pebbles at 110km/h.

As mentioned if doing 2 tyre change, fit the new one to the rear and let the old one finished off in the front. Putting the new one in front the old one becomes older only....:hmmmm:

....

Unless you want to try to even out the wear and then later change at the same time. For me I'd rather put the newer tires on the axle which wears faster for this purpose. But I very rarely change only 2 tires since I rotate every 10K so my tires always wear at the same rate so I change all at the same time. Except for my current car since it's staggered, so no choice I can't rotate front-back anymore.

If you rotate then that is 4 tyre change.
There are pros and cons in everything, so is 2 tyre and 4 tyre change.

4 tyre
Pros
Prolong tyre change by rotation to finish 4 tyres
Even out tyre wear
Cons
At end of life running on bald tyre, not safe
Pay more for 4 tyres

2 tyre
Pros
At any one time will still have 2 tyres with thread pattern.
Pay for 2 tyres at a time

Cons
Change tyres more often

agree..check the inner side...becau the tyre i posted earlier benkak on the inside..while outside still cun amd no cracks or whatsoever

Changed 2 tires today at my fave tire shop... at first wanna do as you said but... as per observed the foreman there

  1. The goodyear up front gotta change fast since botak already
  2. the dunlop at the rear is okay but kinda old (early 2008) but still got threads and so far no visible cracks (inspected in and out by the foreman)

so the decision made
  1. change the front to new duraplus set (marked 48weeks in 2012) and balancing
  2. leave the dunlops at the rear since too old to be put up front

hopefully next year got bonus so I can change the dunlops soon :adore:

In terms of cost, it actually should come back to about the same total cost of changing 4 tires even if you change 2 first. Cuz if you even out the wear then all 4 tires will last say 5yrs and will cost you only at the 5th yr at price of 4 tires. But if you don't even it out, then you'll change more often as much as twice, meaning by yr2-3 you already have to change 2, then another 2 by yr4-5.

Then I feel running 4 evenly worn tires is better than 2 good ones but then 2 old ones as the handling characteristics should still remain the same (but just less grip) than 2 good ones and 2 old ones.

So IMHO still better to routinely rotate to even out the wear and change all 4 at once.

That was the mistaken done earlier, leaving the older tyres in the rear. As the rears wears less it will take long time to wear, therefore they grow old rather then bald.....hahahaha:biggrin:

Actually to mean pay more for 4 tyres at once not price....

Not if you start from new. If all 4 new, by the time the front gets bald, rear will have at least 80% balance (for FWD), so putting in the front is still good. Of course if the rears are too old or have less then 50% thread pattern, then no point.

Rotation also cost money, probably need balancing also if not alignment....

Not to say change 2 or 4 is better. Just giving the pros and cons and up to owner to decide

80% left on the rear for FWD cars? I think that's too much difference I think. Most of the time the rear also already around 50-60% in my experience.

Rotation most of the time don't need balancing, not even alignment, provided your car is in normal condition with already properly balanced and aligned. I used to do rotation my self using 2 jacks, so no money spent as well. :D Only these last few years I don't do it anymore cuz getting old and lazy. :D

i change my tyres every 6-7 months

if 2nd hand tyres i change every 3-4 months

i got sideway syndrome.. so, that doesn't count

hehe

What do you mean by "sideway syndrome" ?

You mean you do drifting with your car?:burnout::driver:

yup.. dorifto in my ke70

it's not d fastest way around d corner but its d most exciting way

No la SF,

It was some time ago, my old house neighbour got a condemned taxi bandar Proton Saga Megavalve.

His car failed Puspakom because of beehive welding on the chasis (kereta sambung)

He couldnt sell it, and left it outside his house,

So we help him start his car once in a while inflate the tyres during weekend and took it for a warm up,

We also did some not so serious drifting with it when the road was wet.

We did some 45 degree handbrake turns, left and right...

We also did reverse handbrake turn 180 degrees but cannot jadi, the car not powerful enough...

One day a patrol car caught us and warned us and we stopped practising, but i learnt quite a bit, hahaha!:smokin::smokin::driver:

oh.. that's not drifting..

that's more like an advance driving skill

drifting is full throttling around d corner..

and only RWD can drift..

my car stock standard with a welded rear axle.. only drift when raining

still learning.. so, no pic to show

Depends from car to car. Mine maybe too powerful in front, so 80% balance.
Of course you DIY no need pay, but how many like you. Most who goes to get the rotation done sure kena chop, balancing and alignment if not then kena cost of rotation.
I always tell the members if no vibration why do balancing?
If tyre wear is good, why do alignment, but most just wants the car to be tip top so pay for it to be checked anyway.....

Yah! bro. zul is correct. FWD how to drift? Maybe in my VR slightly better, The power can loosen the grip of both front and rear but that also more of a skid....ha! ha!

Put lesser traction tyres in the rear, maybe close to bald, then can do in the dry. Up front better have better tyres....:driver:

Front one use Michelin PP2, Rear one use a 30% thread left silverstone...sure can loose the tail easily...

So that can have slight tail happy at the rear for easy 180 degrees turn?
