It’s obvious we’re reporting live from an aircraft hangar but airplanes aren’t the topic of the day. As a tribute to BMW’s roots in aircraft engine production from the early 1900s, BMW Malaysia today unveiled their latest 7th gen 5-series, here at the Hawker Pacific Hangar. The new, sleeker 5 promises to set new benchmarks within the premium business sedan segment.
There’s an obvious sense of maturity in the 5. The 530i M Sport you see above look absolutely authoritative, yet sleek and nothing short of sporty, even at standstill. What’s obvious now are the massive, new kidney grille that connects directly to the headlights. These full LED headlight units now features roundabout light and high beam with a range of 500m.
The new roof line is lower and slopes to the rear, which when combined with the coupe-ish silhouette, adds to the muscularity of the new 5. From the rear, its wide stance highlights the business executive’s spirit for performance. The iconic Hofmeister kink at the C-pillar is retained but has a more dynamic look to it, which is now accentuated by a new crease below the windows.
2017 G30 BMW 530i M Sport Specifications
Engine: 2.0-litre 4-Cylinder Twin Scroll Turbo
Power: 252hp @ 6,500rpm
Torque: 350nm @ 1,450rpm
Zerotohundred: 6.3 seconds
Transmission: 8-speed automatic with Steptronic
BMW’s EfficientLightweight design concept has plenty of influence in the new 5 as well. Apart from being almost 100kg lighter than the F10 5 through its generous use of aluminium and high-strength steels, the new G30 5 series gets an all new chassis, featuring an even lower centre of gravity.
When matched with its inherent 50/50 weight distribution and impressive torsional stiffness, collectively adds to the dynamic driving experience as well as long-distance motoring comfort, which the 5 has always been known for.
Airflow Optimising Elements
What’s interesting is the G30 5’s range of airflow optimisation feature which is said to contribute to its class leading drag coefficient value of up to 0.22. These airflow augmenting aspects comprises of:
- Visible Air Vent Control in the kidney grille
- Air Curtain and Air Inlets in the Front bumper
- Air Breathers in the front front fenders
Performance is highly regarded here in the G30. Just like any boosted 4 cylinder BMWs of today, the 530i M Sport will get the explosive turbo 2L 4 cylinder, specifically BMW’s Twin Power Turbo, Twin Scroll Turbo engine. So expect over 250hp and 350nm. Coupled with creamy smooth 8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission, the new 530i M Sport will dash from Zerotohundred in just 6.2 seconds. Expect over 250hp / 350nm. The 530i M Sport will consume 5.8 litres per 100 km with C02 emissions of 132 grams per kilometre.
New Adaptive Driving Mode : Driving Experience Control System
There is now a 4th mode added into BMW’s Driving Experience Control System. Called the Adaptive Mode, it works together with the G30’s Dynamic Damper Control System (or adaptive suspension) and the Navigation System Professional, where the G30 5 series will intelligently adapt to current driving style and the route ahead. This mode is an addition to existing Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro driving modes.
