R3-Satria (gti)

Yes there are R3 trained technicians at SEs, but only certain ones, like Mutiara.

Talking about service, I had my 3rd service done at Mutiara on Friday. I have to commend them for a job well done. Service was exceptional. This is what the 3S should be all about. Being attentive and helpful and keeping the customer in the loop constantly.

Got warranty issues and replacement parts fitted without problems. Only thing they couldn't do was speakers, which have been ordered.

I will write a letter of commendation for their efforts. Looks like the whipping by Faisal has rubbed off nicely :)

prozac,

On behalf of R3 Owners (namely the few who had participated) please extend our thanks to SGTi Club for the invitation to join them for the track day today. Was a good and eventful outing.

Very professionally organised. Top job. An example of how every club should be run.

:)

When's the next one?

saw u man .. i smiled back too :D ...just came back from sgti club track day, i tots i saw u there, did u join them??

anyway, has you test drive savvy?? i did test drive, didnt expect savvy have good handling and breaking system.. kudos proton!!
waiting for savvy R3 for my wife hahaha :D

Crash .. how your tyres.. I hope its ok.. on the way back from SIC I was behind your car.. banyak batu lompat2 from your car hitting my windscreen.

so any pics from the track day w/ SGTi club to make this guy sakit hati? :p actually i still haven't seen R3 track day 2 pics yet

Guys,So how many of you went on track? Thought only Crash Prozac and 2 more. Hope the Satria R3s performed better on track and impressed the GTi boys. Wanted to join and sibuk sibuk but I busted my AE's lsd & fd on Friday and spent entire morning Satday rebuilding it. fark.

Next R3 Owners track day I expect at least 24 R3 now that 115 have found owners. 1st track day 7 cars 2nd track day 15-16 cars.

So those who missed or just sat on the sidelines watching it's timen to get on track. I'll liase with Lotus and SIC and most probly do it on the 1st or 2nd weekend of July.

plz do it on the 1st week as i will be back! suffian's suppose to be back as well...i think his flight's on the 1st :D coz i might already be heading back to aus on the 2nd weekend

On track were only 3 R3's. As in performed better or not, hard to say as skills differ from one driver to another. There were GTis which we overtook, and there were Gtis which overtook us...with a hard fight :)

This time around, I was concentrating on getting the cleanest and smoothest lines without wearing out the tyres too much. Also experimented with the effects of different tyre pressure and observing the effects of track temperature on our car's grip. A very educational day, indeed.

The next R3 Tarck Day date depends on the circuits availabilty and Motorsports Division personell's availability. In July most of us will be involved in Dreamcars Asia Spore and KL on the first & second week of July.

At the last Track Day the Satria R3 I drove had the stock tyre pressures(31/29, cold). But as the day wore on and once I started feeling the front undresteering, the pressure on the front started going up( as hihg as 38/39 psi hot) so I kept bringing the pressure back to 36psi (hot). This helped maintain the car's balance.

My tyres are ok thankfully. Had them checked out at Revo after the track day. Major scratches on my rims and bodywork. Dammit. Need to get it sorted. Not sure rims can be touched up though. :(

Was a driver error at Turn 7. Was actually doing my 9th or 10th lap. Just getting warmed up! Bugger. I turned in after downshifting to 3rd, unexpectedly, the back stepped out. Countered but it fishtailed and i landed quite hard on the gravel. Marshall was quick to come over to ask "Nak tarik?"

The minute I hit gravel I was just telling myself, "Please don't flip!" Wasn't too nice a sight.

I was slow to react, bottomline is. It was also because I did not expect the back to step out, not at Turn 7 or 8 anyways. It's like my favourite corner, the double apex, where I usually just go balls in, then when I exit get ready for the short 145km/h straight to Turn 9.

The speedfreak in me finally got to see action after managing to get most stones out of the tyres and rims. So i finally got to do more laps that I craved till the session ended at 12pm.

Looking forward to the next one!

I also experimented with some trail braking and mid corner braking to see how our cars react. What I notice is our car has the uncanny ability to fishtail, if you try to "chase" the oversteer by countering.

What I normally do, esp when the rear steps out during turn 7 & 8 is to just apply a bit more throttle (or go FLAT OUT :D ) and neutralize the steering. This will cause the front of the car to drift and neutralize the oversteer. Countering will just make it fishtail more, especially if you apply throttle AND counter.

BTW, that is the same corner where I saw a Kelisa flip over after a fishtail too. Be careful guys. 7&8 is a beautiful corner but don't take it for granted...it will catch you off guard.

Mine went up to 32.5/30.5 respectively after around 5-6 laps during the early part of the morning. Should have gone for another round before actually releasing pressure as the car started to feel a bit wobbly during the first few laps of the next round.

BTW, a word of wisdom. If you're planning to go to track and play around with tyre pressure, do NOT use steel valve caps. A friend of mine almost burnt his fingers while trying to take them off :)

Good comment. Saiful of the SGTi did tell me to just let the steering go then catch it to neutralise the car. It's quite an intriguing corner which I usually go almost flat out. Strange that it kicked out, but experience would have helped me handle the oversteer better. I actually oversteered a couple of times in different places, but countered without problems. Hmm..

And yes, prozac, tyre temperature is very important. Mine can go up to nearly 37-38.

I was tailing a DC5 when he almost lost it at Turn 7 and 8 too. Ate some turf, just barely inches off the gravel, before he managed to see tarmac again.

There were some moments with SGTis where they spun out and ate gravel too. Quite an experience. There was one SGTI which seemed to always either tail me or I tail him on the circuit. Quite fun trying to outrun each other. He spun in front of me at Turn 6. A Lotus Elise on my right and I had to swerve to avoid.

What I notice is that some of the SGTIs seem to roll quite a bit at corners. Hmm..

guys......

it was fun having u to join the track day. guys fm the SGTi club are waiting to see our counterparts fm the 'darkside'....only if there were more present...hehe. in fact the shah alam boyz came late n did not manage to see the turbo GTis on track. otherwise we would have some to go againts the rex & the evo's.

anyway it was fun. just wondering the guy who got hit with the elise... any claims? felt sorry for him man. its surely gonna be costly to beat up the section behind the door....

What actually you should have done if the rear step out is, as you said, just apply more throttle with everything else equal, maintaning steering angle. In any FF car going off-throttle will just make the car oversteer more. Applying brakes when that happens makes it step out even more. So the solution is to enter at a comfortable speed and accelerate out da turn.

No. Never let your hands off the wheel. That will cause the wheel to straighten abruptly and cause you to change direction suddenly. Feed the wheel through your palm. Not let go.

Remember the Satria R3 was developed to be neutral handling with a nudge towards adjustability. So any changes in throttle position, brakes and steering angle wll translate to motions on the road.

As to the SGTi rolling a bit more... That was not developed to handle the circuits like the SR3s . Softer damping and springs rates results in the rolls.

Yeah, I agree. I do not let the steering go in any situation, not even in normal driving, although some are comfortable doing that. It's always a feeding thing for me. I don't brake mid corner either unless I need to trailbrake to balance the car, and certainly did not during Turn 7. I applied throttle as I would usually in oversteer situations. Perhaps I put too much lock on the steering. Who knows? :D We learn by mistakes, and I certainly have. I have a feeling it was due to weight transfer which wasn't done smoothly enough.

The next laps, after clearing out all the stones in my tyres and rims, were a whole lot better.
