How to start a forum?

Guys..I would like to start a forum just like this but I have no idea how to start..
Basically it's for my friends..

The questions are..

Where to I get this forum software? Can i buy it from someone?

How much does it cost to maintain?

Do i have to have knowledge in Web Designing in order to maintain this website?

Starting a forum can be both simple and hard.

For basic forum, u can opt for a shared hosting service and ask the web hosting co to set everything for u. This option is cheap n easy. However, once ur traffic goes up, the hosting co will either ask u to limit the traffic or upgrade to a dedicated hosting service.

For advance, u basically need a team. Each specialised in different key areas such as:

1. Web designing
2. Programming
3. Networking

Last, u need a server hardware + software - u can either choose Linux n some free stuff or go commercial. If free stuff, u definately have to work harder to secure the server. If commercial, u still work hard but at least u will hv support from the vendor.
