How to Differentiate Between Evo 1 and Evo 3 engine?

i need to find out how to diffrentiate between evo 1 and evo 3 engine? lets say its an evo 1 but the prevous owner upgraded the intercooler and all to make it look like evo 3, how to tell? got any number on the engine? the ap is not reliable so cant depend on it.

intercooler looks or size for evo1~3 is da same,i think?
how about ECU code? n turbine code? ;)

the intercooler for e3 is bigger then e1 and e2. both the ecu and the turbine code different. check my posting with the same title in car talk. someone posted up all the answers. thanks for your help anyway.
