When you go downhill and added by the fact that the forward momentum is more, you typically need more brake pressure to reduce the speed of the car and that naturally adds to more brake friction and hence more heat. This eventually leads to your brakes overheating after prolonged use. To reduce the brake usage, we use low gears to aid in the braking of the car.
