Turning the clocks back to February 1963, Jaguar planned to produce a batch of 18 exclusive cars under the ‘Special GT E-Type’ project. These cars are a series of lightweight, aluminium-bodied variants of the E-Type that was specifically designed for competition. Even so, only 12 units ever reached the customers by 1964.
Since that was 50 years ago and they still have 6 units left to be built, Jaguar has decided to make it right by producing the remaining units of this special E-Type. These lightweight E-Types will be built at the original Browns Lane plant in England, under the hands of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division.
All six customers will get their cars with the original VIN numbers allocated in 1963. All the cars will also be built to the original specification, featuring the same method of building and materials as the first dozen cars. The same goes to the power plant where an inline-six engine derived from the XK of the era will be fitted in. With an output of 300-horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, the power is sent to the magnesium alloy wheels covered in Dunlop racing rubber.
The car will make its first public appearance at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance taking place this 14 August 2014.
