can i change my bmw 523i e39 ori engine to 2JZ japanese engine??

4 months ago i bought 2nd hand bmw 523i e39 year 1997 at price of rm60k..rite now the car give me prob especially the engine and cost to repair it is quite expensive...i'm thinking to change my bmw engine to 2JZ japanese engine...is it possible to do dat??


i hear a lots of bmw e30,e34&e36 has already converted from bmw engine to SR20,1JZ or 2JZ and the conversion is done successfully...

Yes the conversion is possible. But you might need to do alot of upgrades to support the mod such as :

1)Relocating the battery since your engine bay might not have enough room for important stuff
2)upgrading brakes and springs as your stock ones will not be able to fully support
3)chasis stiffening with bars
4)Tyres/Rims

Before E39 the BMW 5 series E34 (24v) battery already not in the engine bay (under the rear seat).


Earlier BMWs like E34 and E36 is easier to convert to Jap engines because the wiring technology is still quite old and not many electronics like traction control. For newer BMW like E39 be careful of wiring issues coz they have a lot of integrated electronics. I remember one mechanic installed a CBU BMW engine from a half cut into a CKD BMW but the car could not start. Traced out the problem to the sunroof (CBU has but CKD doesn't have).

So, just be aware of the wiring issues.

not advisable for E39 models due to wirings n stuffs unlike older models E34 where its not so complicated..most would recommend for you to get E39 halfcut instead depending of what kind of prob you're having at the moment with the engine..but if its for fun,go ahead bro..you should have ample space for 2JZ stuffed in there..

Yeah man, keep it original. Either find a similar engine OR since you were thinking of a 2jz that means you want power. Yours is a 2.3 right? Why not get something bigger then, like a BMW 3litre engine? Maybe the 3litre in line 6? Don't think that just because a 2jz has more horsepower means it's a better performer. But anyways you will have alot more headaches when putting in a different engine, such as wiring issues, modding the engine mount issues (this is something I would never want to mess with unless the mech is good) and maybe a modified engine bay. But anyways see if a better engine can be a choice. Have you read BMW Performance? Many people from Europe does alot of engine transplants with their BMWs. They find M3 or even M5 engines and put it into their E30s and that's a small car. Really awesome. Anyways hope this would give you some good alternatives!

plus custom work is not cheap and if you think you can cut corners with the transplant, think again. once your're done you'd have been better off working with a bmw engine. research online and look for custom set ups done to the e39 to get an idea.

I dunno price but I have read a person who put in the M3 engine from an E46 into his E36. That was from the Stuttgart halfcut shop. But don't go there, cuthroat to the max!! If not the M series can put in th 3litre 6, okay what?

Like the guy said, do some research and find something better! 2.3 is a low end engine for the BMW like the 2.3 litre mercs and below. Maybe once you've found a higher end engine it will be reliable
