Upon entering any circuit or motorsport events, we were repeatedly reminded of the phrase “motorsports is dangerous”. Of course speed will get the adrenaline pumping and it is easy to forget that even a minute mistake at high speeds can lead to some serious consequences. But that does not mean only the drivers need to be cautious as things could also get ugly for the spectators wanting to get as close as possible to the action.

During the Round 4 of the 2015 CCR Forza Tifosi Challenge race at Road America, Jim Booth in the #13 Ferrari 458 was getting into a heated battle with Steve Hill in the #33 Ferrari F430. As Booth was catching up with Hill, he tried to pass the F430 from the inside line and that is where things go awry in a blink of an eye.

As they were approaching Turn 5, Hill’s F430 slightly tapped Booth’s 458 on the front right side and while it does not look like a serious shunt from Hill’s cockpit view, the collision caused the 458 to catch air and sending it airborne for over 112 metres in a spectacular manner. But the carnage does not stop there as the 458 then crashed into the catch fence, ripping the car up into a million pieces.

Luckily for Booth, Ferrari sets high safety standard for their race cars and he was able to walk away from this spectacular crash without any major injuries. And the spectators were lucky as well as the designers of Road America put great emphasis in safety by putting up the catch fence which had operated as designed.
