ZEROTOLOSE Go-Kart 4 Hours Endurance Karting 2014 wraps up under the stars!

With the Sepang 12 Hour now in the bag, we now turn our attention to our own mini-scale endurance race. The first round of Zerotohundred.com X DDM Academy’s ZEROTOLOSE Go-Kart Enduro Challenge turned out to be a great success with all available slots being filled by karters of all ages, giving a go in the 2 hours endurance race. And for this round, we would like to make it more challenging by doubling it into a 4-hour endurance race.

Like the first ZEROTOLOSE, it did not take long for the available slots to be snatched by those looking for a unique way to spend their weekend. After the participants registered themselves, they were briefed of the rules and regulations of the race such as the pit stops, refuelling and driver changes.

The karts were assigned randomly through a ballot and soon after, the 15-minute practice session commenced to give first-timers a chance to familiarize themselves with the 1.247km gokart circuit.

It was then followed by the qualifying session and after the participants had posted their best time to determine a spot on the grid, the karts were lined up at one side of the circuit as the race will once again kick off in the classical Le Mans-styled start.

The serenity of Sepang International Gokart Circuit instantly turned into a four-wheeled chaos as the swarm of 13 gokarts burbled their way into the 4-hour endurance race. This round’s longer duration is not the only unique addition into the challenge as this time the race starts at 5pm and goes on into the night until 9pm, giving the participants a taste of Le Mans with the changing conditions.

Although there is no prize money up for grabs for the top finishers, it was no excuse for them to back off from the throttle. Right from the start, everyone had their game faces on and stormed towards Turn 1. These gokarts might not be the fastest available, but the participants pushed them to the limits and there was a lot of exciting wheel-to-wheel actions along the way.

The pit stops also provided some exciting moments as the teams scuffled to perform the driver changes as swiftly as possible to return to the race and have an edge against their opponents.

As the sun goes down, the circuit was illuminated by the spotlights and immediately posed a different challenge to the participants. While one could properly navigate themselves across the circuit in the day, the participants would have to rely on guts and instinct to maintain the pace as there are certain areas of the circuit which are significantly darker than the rest of it. Fortunately, everyone managed to go through it without a hitch.

As the hours passed by and closing in to the 9pm mark, anxious team members flock the timing screen to check their positions. After the final pit stop, the final drivers gave all their best in the last stint before passing the chequered flag at precisely 9pm.

Crossing the finish line with the win is JDS (Jacky, Daniel, Jenson), having completed 204 laps followed by Team NWCO (Nasharuddin, Admi, Ammar, Nurul) with 202 laps in the bag. Coming in third is Naztech Racing (Nazaruddin, Iskandar, Jin Kai, Tarmizi) with a total lap count of 201.
