Father of the Mclaren F1 speaks on the new MP4-12C

Gordon Murray – the man responsible for a 20-year old car that is still considered to be the greatest ever even with today’s modern standards. Not afraid to try anything unconventional (not in a Bangle kind of way), Gordon actually created the first lightweight track monster long before the Ariel Atom, he called it the Rocket and it was built by the Light Car Company.

The same lightweight philosophy was also used when designing the Mclaren F1 and pretty much every car he worked on save the Mercedes-Mclaren SLR, but Gordon never quite got his way with the SLR. While at Mclaren, Gordon worked on a carbon-fiber monocoque that was planned for a follow-up to the SLR, but that didn’t quite happen as planned and the SLR has now been phased out and Mclaren and Mercedes-Benz has ended their partnership.

However, that was not the end of Mclaren road cars and recently Mclaren unveiled their latest independent car after the F1, the MP4-12C. The new car stays true to the Gordon touch and kept the lightweight philosophy and much to the delight of the genius designer, the new Macca uses the carbon-fiber monocoque that Gordon worked on. No other supercar today uses the same design, giving Mclaren a very unique USP. UK magazine Auto Express recently caught up with Gordon to hear his opinions on the new MP4-12C and on the new T25 city car that he’s currently working on, you can click here to read what the Einstein of car design has to say about the new Mclaren.
