Toyobaru RWD Sports Car Delayed To 2012 Or Beyond

toy_sub_can

Rumours of Toyota and Subaru working together on a rear-wheel-drive sports car with “wonderful styling” have been replaced by rumours that the car has been put on hold.

The future drift machine, regarded by many as the potential successor to the now legendary AE86, is believe to be based on the current Subaru Legacy platform and powered by a boxer engine putting out around 200hp through a six speed manual.

Originally due in 2011, now, according to Nikkei, the car has been pushed back to at least 2012. But with things set to get even worse around the globe, 2012 may just come and go without any trace of a Toyobaru RWD sports car.

I knew it was too good to be true. A manual RWD car made for the tuning crowd just doesn’t happen very often anymore. And those that do happen have their warranties void at a touch of a button.

Well its bound to happen. Anyway it doens't look too realistic early on when it was announced. Firstly a joint development of a car needs parts sharing as part of the deal. You need a platform that both manufacturers can use and engine parts that are almost 50% shared among them. The interiors and panels can be different, but the chassis must be the same. A good example of such sharing is Volvo V40 and Mitsubishi Carisma (Galant).

This news seems to favour subaru putting a car out. But both pictures seem to lean towards Toyota Celica. (Is this what happens when you mix marriage Takumi and Bunta's car? hehe) This news does not lay out any specfic details but merely like a dream.
