Remember the gorgeous gull wing doored 300SL from the 50’s? It was an item of wet dreams and still is to some today. If you don’t quite remember that dream, the picture below might help:
Remember now? Well, Benz is currently at its drawing boards penning out a replacement model for it. Planned for debut in 2010, hopes are high that the car will be as successful as its famous predecessor from the fifties.
Code named W197, prototype mules of the new two-seater have been sighted and caught on camera by our sources. Pictured below, Benz plans to sell 3000 to 5000 units per year. Assembled at the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen, the car’s development will be undertaken by AMG in Affalterbach. So expect mammoth power thanks to AMG gracing it.
The car will include components from future SL’s but it will be a few centimeters shorter in overall length. Similar to the old school gullwing, to new SL will retain the tubular frame and rear-wheel drive (fun!!). The engine will be a massive 620hp V8.
Officially it is yet unnamed but expect a price tag in the mid mil’s.
