Former F1 Star Michael Schumacher Critically Injured in Skiing Mishap

Reports are coming in from several sources that the seven-time Formula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher was critically injured while skiing in the French Alps on Sunday. Flown immediately to the Grenoble University Hospital Center, the retired racing driver arrived at the hospital in a coma and underwent immediate surgery for serious head trauma.

The incident took place at the Meribel resort where Schumacher fell while skiing and hit his head on a rock. Resort managers said that he had been wearing a helmet and was conscious when rescuers first responded to the scene.

The 44-year-old German was stated to be “suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation. He remains in a critical condition”, according to the hospital statement.

Schumacher’s former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who himself experienced life-threatening injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix back in 2009, wrote on Instagram: “I am praying for you my brother! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you Michael.”

Schumacher initially retired from Formula 1 back in 2006 after snatching an incredible streak of five straight titles with Ferrari following two earlier ones with Benetton. Making a comeback to the sport in 2010, he drove for three seasons for Mercedes before retiring again last year.
