Officially Official: Petronas Signs 5-Year Agreement To Partner Mercedes in Formula One

Just moments ago Petronas announced a five-year agreement with major auto-manufacturer Mercedes, marking a new partnership for the company in Formula One. Under the terms of the agreement, Petronas will become the title partner to the Mercedes GP team, the reigning Formula One world champions. The team will from 2010 be officially known as the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team.

The partnership also allows related business arrangements with Mercedes that will support Petronas’ international business expansion efforts, particularly in its global lubricant business.

The exclusive rights of a title partner and association with the premium, internationally-renowned Mercedes brand will further enhance Petrnoas and Malaysia’s ongoing global brand positioning efforts. Petronas will also be able to continue to leverage on the extensive international exposure offered by the sport to grow its existing business activities.

The partnership also presents Petronas with the opportunity to utilise and leverage on Mercedes’ long motor sport heritage to further supplement its talent development initiatives as part of its contribution towards the development of Malaysia’s motorsports industry.

In addition to enhancing its brand, Petronas’ association and involvement in international motorsport over the past two decades has been a significant contributor to the growth of its business in particular its lubricants business in the global arena. The association has also paved the way for technological and knowledge acquisition relevant to the oil and gas industry.

Petronas will also continue to be the title sponsor of the Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix, which is proven to be an effective platform to promote Malaysia on the global stage.

joshua petronas currently want to expand their engine lubricant market,currently control 2% of global engine lubricant market onviously they want to expand, i dont think lotus have what mercedes can offer!!...petronas want a partner that can gives input,image branding etc etc.....it's good that they don't sponsor lotus f1 after all their in the f1 thingy on a business stratgy not feeding the cronies.

If someone is serious about running Petronas as a business, they won't give two hoots about the 1Malysia nonsense. They only care that their product gets noticed in the most positive of circumstances.

Formula One with its millions of viewership has a lot of potential publicity in that regard.

From a marketing point of view, it just make sense that you want your logos on a car that has a realistic potential of running at the front. Everyone wants to be associated with competitive teams, not some mid-pack or rear-pack outfit that cannot realistically challenge for wins on their debut season. Mobil-One - the official oil for McLaren Mercedes, Shell - the official oil for Ferrari F1. All winners. Sounds good on your marketing brochure, doesn't it ?

Why would an oil company want to be associated with a car that is not competitive ? What kind of message is that sending out ?

Because the average consumer are generally simple-minded fools. There may not be anything wrong with the oil but simpletons who do not understand F1 tend to equate that with some defect if you happen to be sponsoring and supplying a team that is not competitive.

Is that explanation clear enough for some of you 1Malaysia dumbasses ?

Some of the New Seven Sisters have become little more than their home country’s bottomless piggybank, funding politically expedient social ventures. The poster child of irresponsible profligacy is President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela who spends two-thirds of PDVSA’s profits on his populist social programs. The result? PDVSA’s production capacity has fallen from 3.4 to 1.5 million barrels per day since 1999. In Iran, NIOC cannot boost its oil production or fix its refineries because its profits go toward keeping gas at 40 cents per gallon for Iranian consumers. In Russia, too, little of Gazprom’s earnings go towards upgrading Russia’s antiquated, leaking pipeline system.

This mismanagement has global consequences. The IEA estimates that the world is falling 20% short of making the investment needed to ensure adequate energy supplies for the next 25 years. And governments’ unwillingness to allow their national oil companies to reinvest profits back into industry is the primary culprit.

Among the New Seven Sisters, only Saudi Aramco, Petrobras, and Petronas have turned themselves into international players able to compete with the likes of BP, Chevron and Royal Dutch Shell. That’s why the revenues of the new Seven Sisters noticeably lag those of the Western majors.

The New Seven Sisters have the natural resources. The Western majors have financial resources
and technical and managerial know-how. At some point, the New Seven Sisters will need the help of the Western majors to develop their reserves. But once their fields decline and they can no longer produce as much oil and revenue as they want, it might just be too late.

With 25% of the world’s oil reserves and with nearly triple the capacity of any other group, Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest and most sophisticated national oil company. Think of Saudi Aramco as the world’s self-appointed central banker of oil — turning taps on when there is a shortage of global supply — and off when prices are falling below its comfort level.

In 2002, Saudi Aramco launched its most ambitious expansion program in a generation. By investing $50 billion over 15-20 years, Saudi Aramco aims to boost production capacity from 11 million barrels to 15 million barrels per day, thereby consolidating its position as the world’s most powerful oil company.

Although less powerful than the Saudis, the other sisters now dominate the familiar Western majors in terms of influence. Russia’s Gazprom is the industry bad boy, never reluctant to flex its muscles on the battlefield of business. NIOC, Iran’s national energy company, has partnerships with Italian, French, Dutch and Norwegian companies and collaborates with Chinese and Russian groups. PDVSA is Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s political pawn. The company’s profits are subsidizing London commuters. Brazil’s Petrobras is a global leader in finding and producing oil from deep waters. “Petronas is Malaysia’s national oil company and may be the slickest and most commercial organization of the bunch”[the slickiest].

thanks Null for the input... A lay man like me wouldn't know that!

i guess thats a good partnership between Petronas & Mercedes. it might give a significantly big advantage to Petronas if things goes well next season.. Well as they say, ur the "slickest" of all!

However why do some people always likes to include politics/cronies in the picture? dont you have other things to moan? get a life!
