Red Bull continued to exude their dominating stature as Mark Webber remained the fastest on the time sheets with teammate and favourite to take the win this Sunday, Sebastian Vettel, coming in fourth fastest, sandwiching the McLaren duo.
The top four drivers were split by a quarter of a second, as Webber’s fastest time of 1:36:876, on Pirlli’s Option tyres, erased Vettel’s time of 1:37:090 that was leading the timesheets until the halfway mark of the 90-minute session.
Petronas Mercedes GP’ Michael Schumacher showed some of his old form by coming in fifth fastest, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Schumacher’s teammate, Nico Rosberg, took seventh, pipping out Nick Heidfield and Fernando Alonso with Jaime Alguersuari completing the top ten.
The only highlight of an uneventful second practice session was Pastor Maldonado sending his Williams into the barrier after edging his right tyre on the grass at the pit entry. Nonetheless, the Venezuelan managed a faster time than teammate Rubens Barrichello before the incident, putting the pair in the eleventh and twelfth spot respectively.
As the session entered the final 30-minutes, the high-tyre wear that will surely plague the teams during the race came about, as some of the teams put their cars out in race trim with a high fuel load and soft tyre combo. This brought about times in the 1:44 range before Webber clocked in a 1:43 lap in race trim to fire a warning shot to his rivals.
Other notable times include Lotus-Renault’s Vitaly Petrov coming in thirteenth and the Team Lotus boys taking the twentieth and twenty-third spot with Jarno Trulli coming ahead of teammate Heikki Kovalainen, who spent most of the second practice in the pits.
