2007 was a disastrous year for Team Mclaren-Mercedes and Ron Dennis, no driver’s championship, being kicked out of the constructors’ title and a $100 million fine. To add salt to the wound, double world champion, Fernando Alonso walked away from the team; a direct result of amateurish crisis management. These events have resulted in engine partner Mercedes having to swallow a bitter pill and now they are looking to obtain a majority stake in Mclaren, which will consequently see the end of long term Mclaren supremo Ron Dennis.
According to German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport, Mercedes wants to have more control over the British team to eradicate errors made during the drivers title run and improve team and crisis management. Apparently negotiations have been ongoing since October last year.
Will this mark the end of Mclaren under Ron Dennis and the rise of Mclaren as a dominating force in Formula 1™? What will happen to Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovolainen? Things will start getting really interesting from here; watch this space.
