Nasim Sdn*Bhd and the News Straits Times awarded winners of the inaugural NST-Peugeot Design Competition.

<!--more-->The competition, which was open to both university/college and secondary students challenged students to design what they envisioned to be the perfect Peugeot for Southeast Asian markets in the year 2018. the awards ceremony was graced by Yang Berhormat Mulia Dato' Raja Abidin, Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being.



"The competition was a success as we received nearly 150 entries. Many of the entries comprised of modern and sophisticated designs. There seems to be a high level of interest in automotive design in Malaysia and we hope this competition served as the initial pltform for the students to showcase their creativity and abilities," said En SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, Joint Group Executive Chairman of the Naza Group of Companies.



The NST-Peugeot Design Competition was launched in may 2011. In total, 105 entries were received from university and college students while there were 43 entries from secondary school students.

"Looking at the overwhelming response from secondary and college students, and the quality of ideas and concepts that they have come up with, I must applaud Peugeot for driving this idea and for having the foresight to tap into this next generation of talent. I hope that in the years to come, this competition will be the launch pad for many promising careers and rising stars of design," said Datuk Syed Nadzri Syed Harun, Group Editior of the News Straits Times.

Commenting on the design competition, Dato' Raja Nong Chik said: "Any automotive designer can tell you that it is no simple task to design one automobile that will suit the needs of people from many different markets, especially one meant for a market six years from now. I am sure that it has been a long and arduous journey for the students from the respective colleges and universities to see their concepts and designs fo from ideas to drawings to a physical scale model. These students are the future talent that will one day advance our soft skills in design, and it is my hope that the NST-Peugeot Design Competition will continue to open doors of opportunity for Malaysian students to showcase their talent to the world."



For the competition, secondary school students were required to submit a design illustration mounted on an A3 or A2 board that included a perspective and package drawing and a description of the design in English.

University and college students were also required to participate in teams of two and submit a design illustration mounted on an A3 or A2 board following which nine semi-finalists were shortlisted. The participants of this shortlisted group to submit an quarter scale model of their proposed design.

After the scale models were received, the judging process began on 24th Feb 2012 to pick three winners in the university/college category and five winners from the secondary school category.



The judging panel for the competition comprised of representatives from the Malaysian Automotive Institute, NST, Nasim, Automobiles Peugeot and the architectural industry.



The top prize winner in the college category received an all-expense paid, five-days four-nights trip to Paris and Peugeot's Design Centre in Velizy, France for all members of the team including their professor/tutor who oversaw their project. They will also receive RM1,000 each, Peugeot merchandise worth Euro 100 for all members of the group and a three-month automotive internship with the Naza Group.



Second placed winners also receive an all-expense paid trip for *five-days four-nights trip to Paris for two that also includes visiting Peugeot's design centre in Velizy, France, Peugeot merchandise valued at Euro 100 for two members of the team and a three-month automotive internship with the Naza Group.



As for the third placed winners, they receive,*RM250 for two member in the team and a three-month automotive internship with the Naza Group.



For secondary school students, the first placed winner recceived an iPad2 and Peugeot merchandise. The second place winner receive RM500 and third placed winners received RM250 and Peugeot merchandise.



The fourth placed winner received RM150 and Peugeot merchandise while the fifth placed winner received Peugeot merchandise. Consolation prizes were also given to a further 30 participants in the secondary school category.
