Ferrari might be separated from Fiat group

The news that at least two parties might be interested in purchasing over the commercial rights to Formula One has left the rumour mills clocking in some serious overtime but now an even more interesting piece has surfaced, linking one of the buyers, who also happens to be owned by the Fiat Group, towards separating Ferrari from the Fiat Group’s umbrella.

The company, called Exor, is a private investment company for the Agnelli family that owns the Fiat empire. Now the company is looking towards spinning Ferrari into an entirely separate entity that would place the sportscar maker outside the Fiat group.

Reasons behind the potential move are scarce but it would make Ferrari untouchable in the case of a merger between Fiat and Chrysler as well as making it easier to offload the brand or part of it.

However, the brand would still be owned by the Agnelli as well as the Elkann family as they would be granted proportional stakes in the separate Ferrari as equal to their current share of the Fiat empire.

Recently, the Elkann brothers have been linked to a more direct role at Ferrari too. John Elkann chairs Fiat and Exor while his brother Lapo has been rumoured to replace Luca di Montezemolo as Ferrari’s chairman should the latter step down.

How all this, if it does actually happen, will affect Ferrari is yet unknown but we’re going to hazard a guess that nothing much will change as the same faces are still behind the scenes, more or less.
