It was only a matter of time before somebody threw McLaren’s benchmark-setting F1 against its ‘supposed’ spiritual successor, the MP4-12C. The apostrophes are present because even though this is McLaren’s first fully home-built sportscar since the F1, the boys from Woking themselves have made it crystal clear that the MP4-12C was never intended to be in the same class as the F1.
The F1 was in a league of its own. Even now, the last batches produced of the car is touching 13 years old but it still makes some of the latest and modern supercars eat humble pie on a daily basis. Nonetheless, while the F1 was more balls-to-the-walls, hard core and raw, the MP4-12C was going to try and blend everyday driveability into the equation as well.
Still, you’d be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t want to know who came out tops. And in lieu of that, the dependable blokes at Autocar have thrown those to machines into the ring for a bout.
We won’t spoil it by revealing the winner but just keep in mind the point made in the opening paragraph.
