Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept

The Next NSX?

Acura had an ace up its sleeve at the North American International Auto Show. To the delight of onlookers, the company unveiled the Advanced Sports Car Concept (ASCC), which for all intents and purposes will serve as the foundation for the successor to the NSX. But unlike the heralded mid-engine sports car, the ASCC will have its engine located in front of the cabin. But that’s not to say that the future exotic won't carry the spirit of the NSX. If you look closely, you’ll notice subtle cues that have carried over from its predecessor, including the long one-piece taillight and all-black canopy. The front even hints of a pop-up headlight design that was used on the first-generation NSX.

Jon Ikeda, principal designer of the Acura Design Center, said: “Our intention was to design an exotic sports car that gracefully combines advanced technology and strong emotion. Our working theme when styling this car was `Keen Edge Design.’”

The ASCC is large by sports-car standards, with an overall length of 181.5 in. and a wheelbase of 108.8. This opens up the possibility of the car becoming a 2+2, but Ikeda said that it wasn’t a consideration when designing the car.

The car’s wheel design is especially noteworthy; it’s an original Acura design, and something that Ikeda and his designers take great pride in. Look closely and you can see the Acura logo on each spoke. The wheel and tire sizes are production-ready at 255/40R-19s up front and 295/35R-20s at the rear.

As for the technical specifications of the car, we know one thing for sure, it will be powered by a V-10. We expect output to be in the 500-bhp range, with a top speed near 200 mph. It will probably be all-wheel drive, equipped with Acura’s SH-AWD system currently on the RL, MDX and RDX. The price of the car is expected to be in the neighborhood of $100,000 to $150,000.

I believe cars with LED permits smaller headlamp design with similar if not better light output. Thats the main advantage of LED head lamps, you need not reserve a chunk of your bonnet for the plugs, housings (which couldn't be too close to the bulb cos of the heat and such) etc.

Hence LEDs the way to go, and I'm hoping for this head lamp design to be put into production. ---- which is unlikely.

We’ve been hearing a lot about Honda’s upcoming hybrid-only model that is supposed to go head-to-head with the Toyota Prius. Honda CEO, Takeo Fukui, is now out and about speaking very confidently of Honda’s upcoming hybrid plans. First of all, Fukui feels that Honda suffered a huge misstep by rolling out a hybrid version of its Civic instead of a hybrid-only model.

“The real competition has just begun,” Fukui...
