The growing market share of SUVs and crossovers continue pushing manufacturers to compete and offer their best into the segment.

Apart from traditional market players, there are plenty of newcomers, too. Peugeot a real contender, however took a different approach, to transform its 5008 model line into an SUV.

The first-generation 5008 was a van-like people mover. With the introduction of the 2017 model year, the 5008 now shifts its direction into a seven-seater SUV.

It will make its first public appearance at this year’s Paris Auto Show.

Exterior

Aesthetically, the new 5008 derives Peugeot’s latest design language in a more rugged way. The front look is characterized by the front of 408; thin 3-slats grille and sharp headlights, added by aggressive lower intakes.

To emphasize the SUV stance, there’s grey panels that appear from the front intakes, front wheel arches, down to side sills, rear wheel arches and then forming a tough-looking rear bumper.

Nothing too striking on its rear, however. The tail lights are LED units, with claw-like motif. The chrome trim above the windows adds a premium look to the overall appearance.

Interior

The 5008 gets a driver-oriented centre console and an instrument panel that’s configurable and fully digital. There’s an 8-inch pup-up touchscreen that runs the latest generation Peugeot’s infotainment system.

Configuring three-row seats, the 5008 is a proper 7-seater, although the third row seats are offered as an option at an extra cost. Packed with tonnes of driving aids – 360-degree camera, hill descent control, distance alert, lane departure warning system, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control – the 5008 is simply one of the most high-tech cars ever produced by Peugeot.

Engine

The new 5008 will be available with the selection of petrol- and diesel-powered engines. The former consisting of a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine capable of 130hp and an aging 1.6-litre unit that makes 165hp. As for the oil burner unit, it includes a 1.6-litre with 100hp or 120hp and a 2.0-litre producing 150hp or 180hp.

Most engines can be paired to either a manual or an automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is the sole setup available.
