As Honda preps up to reunite with McLaren in the realms of Formula 1 after 22 years, the Japanese manufacturer proceeds to reveal their new turbocharged V6 power plant at the recent 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. And they now also have something for the online community as they released a short film showing the development of the engine and some sound clips as well.
After departing from Formula 1 in 2009 due to the Global Financial Crisis, Honda is making a comeback in 2015 as a power unit supplier. There is no doubt that all eyes are set on Honda and McLaren as both brands have some interesting news happening on each side. Honda is welcoming the arrival of their new NSX and turbocharged Type-R, while McLaren might be seeing Fernando Alonso joining the team.
The engineering and development of the engine is based at Honda’s R&D centre in Sakura, Japan, where anything related to motorsport developments was shifted there earlier this year. Aside from the Japan facility, Honda is also conducting tests with the new engine, including the turbo and energy recovery system at their racing base in Milton Keynes, UK.
The new engine meets FIA’s new engine regulations of being a 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engine. It is paired with a hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that harvests energy through two recovery methods: regenerative braking (MGU-K), and from the heat via a thermal energy recovery system (MGU-H).
