Chris Harris sells his V12 Ferrari – “it cost me a chunk of money I can’t justify”

About a year ago – Chris ‘Monkey’ Harris sold his ruddy amazing Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, in favour of a second-hand Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. The main reason for the migration was, according to ‘Monkey’, that the RS 4.0 was expensive to run and maintain.

Well, about a year down the line now and he has again decided to let go of the prancing horse. Why? running cost. Joy oh joy…isn’t that a surprise?

In a period of 10 months – the 599 depreciated £6000 and at the same time, plus a couple of expenditures throughout his ownership (including a few sets of tyres over the summer) which adds up a total of £10,000. Indeed! That’s £10,000 in 10 months. Doesn’t it seem rather an exuberant cost when you consider that it had only clocked 3000 miles?

Lets admit the fact that these supercars are definitely not cheap to run. As Chris mentioned – he never saw anything more than 14mpg and that was being light on the loud pedal. A slip of the right foot and he’ll start seeing single digits on the miles per gallon read-out. His rant on the ownership continued, with the fact that he had to spend some money on drivetrain warranty and major services which cost him a few extra pennies too.
Despite the rants – he had no regrets owning the Ferrari 599. He mentioned that it was practical and it would have eaten the miles up so easily. The 599 never gave any major issues in his period of ownership too, and that the engine was in a class of its own.
Chris Harris is amongst the lucky few automotive journalist in the world who gets to enjoy these amazing machines. No doubt that they’re a dream to most of us – and for the majority that owns these vehicles and keeping it in storage like a gem, Chris justifies his purchases and drives it like how a proper enthusiasts would.
The question he puts out to his readers now is – “What next?”
Tough to suggest to a man who has had the opportunity to drive almost all of the amazing cars currently on the market. Following his taste in cars – rest assured that his next big purchase wouldn’t be anything less than 500 horsepower.
