After the BMW M6 and the new M4, the upcoming 2016 MotoGP season will be seeing the all-new BMW M2 assuming the role as the safety car in the race. But before handing over the car to Dorna Sports, the organizer of MotoGP, this new BMW coupe would first have to go through a number of modifications.

To make the M2’s presence more noticeable on the track, it is fitted with a roof-mounted light bar. The driver receives updates on the race via a radio communication system, and additional reinforcement to the body was also thrown in by BMW as well as some new aerodynamic aids crafted from carbon fiber.

As for the powertrain, the M2 still gets the standard 365-horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque (369 lb-ft with overboost) from the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. But of course, that is more than enough to do the job as it will get the M2 from zerotohundred in 4.2 seconds, all the way to a limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The new M2 safety car will see action for the first time at the first race of the 2016 MotoGP season, soon to take place at the Losail International Circuit in Doha, Qatar, on March 20th.
