Just starting this thread for discussion purposes. I hope I won't get flamed for starting this.

As most people know, VW cars with DSG are always plague with their gearbox failures and problems. So, to solve this problem, is there anyone in our country who swapped their DSG into manual transmission sourced from their European siblings? It is cheaper to maintain the manual gearbox too compared to DSG.

I've read before UK Top Gear magazine reviews of Golf GTI and other VW cars. They seemed to prefer opting for manual option instead of DSG.

If this can be done here, then I guess it should solve the main problem of VW cars over here?

Hi, I am quite new, but just want to share. I have ever read somewhere on that some changed their VW DSG to Audi's S-Tronic and claimed it is more reliable. I believe I read it in one of the Singapore car forum.

Since Audi also belongs to VW Group so I don't know how true is this.

The S-tronic gear in a VW? That's madly interesting! I wonder if it's a direct fit or needs a conversion plate?

I wonder how much would it cost to ship in a manual GB from the UK? GBP is kinda high at the moment. Actually scratch that. GBP is ALWAYS high.

ECU + TCU.. it's not physically bolt it on and go.

Frankly speaking, don't bother. Modern cars have too many electronic gremlins, too many things will go wrong.

Or are there any Asia countries that sells VW cars with MT option? Thailand, Philippines, India? I know these countries have MT option for cars like new Civic, Corolla Altis, City....

I suppose it should be doable if one can source a manual gearbox from somewhere. Question is how much will it cost and whether it's worth it! Like my Mark X, actually it can also convert to manual using IS250 manual gearbox which should be awesome. SARD has a conversion kit for it, but it costs too damn expensive! :banghead: (If not mistaken >20k!)

Further more, for GTI 6 speed DSG, it seems not as problematic as the lower models 7 speed DSG.

I think if the manual conversion from DSG to MT can be done here even if it is priced like 10k to 15k for a problem free conversion, it still sounds like a good idea for me.

For me, I look at it this way. Currently, used VW Scirocco seems to be selling for like RM80k to RM110k. Most of them are not that old either (year 2010 and above). The benefits that I can see from getting one and exchanging the gearbox to MT are :

1. Fun factor of course. Shifting with gear knob and clutch pedal. Almost like the fun of driving a Megane RS. Not many conti cars over here that came with MT gearbox. I only remember the Megane RS and 208 GTI. Unless you want to count in Ford.

2. Cheap roadtax too. 1.4 litre engine.

3. Power isn't bad either. 160hp with 240nm of torque for 1.4 litre twin charged. Coupled with a MT box, it can be quite fun.

4. Scirocco doesn't look bad to me. Sporty and modern looking. Quite a number of bodykits available if you want to mod it. Can even fit large rims for it as well.

5. Not so sure about FC but I think it won't be bad until it is not suitable to be daily driven isn't it? Should be better than old high revving NA 1.6 engines like B16A, 4A-GE, 4G92...

6. Still can get loan from bank for the car to pay for installment since they are not that old.

Looking at all these points that I have listed, I think getting one is not that bad. Just the DSG problem that is causing fear in many people. I could be wrong in my points, so pardon me if I am.

Yup, the major gb having problems is the 7 speed DSG. If 6 speed can fit in would be good.....

I still think 6 speed MT will be even better. Lighter gearbox, more engaging drive, cheaper maintenance. Don't need to use DSG gearbox oil. Even when you go for a clutch replacement, just 1 clutch instead of 2 in DSG. Just that it may not be suitable for everyone since it is MT.

As for the faster shifts in miliseconds for DSG, I don't really bother about that. It is more about having a fun drive instead of just being faster, haha.

But over here, we usually don't have much choice for transmission anymore. We are always given AT most of the time. Looking at new conti cars available here, I think there is less than 10 choices if you want to go MT. Not counting Porsche here because I think you can get a special order for MT variants if you want.

You sound like so many who again becomes itchy with the low used prices of VW!

Only when they come with MT. DSG is enough to put me away now. If I want to go for performance only, I'll look at JDM instead like WRX STI, Evo, RX-7. VW is like the car that can be used as a daily car with decent performance. The other car that I might consider as a fun daily car will be the 2nd gen GE8 Honda Fit/Jazz, again with a MT gearbox swap from halfcut.

10 to 15k for a DSG to manual conversion? Dream on.

Let's take a cheaper Japanese car for an example. The CVT GB on my car costs 24k to replace brand new. Used (locally sourced) about 8k. Work shop fees probably round figure 500.

Considering there are no manual VWs in Malaysia, you'd have to ship from UK (Thailand don't have manuals according to their website). Nothing you ship in from UK will cost any less than 20k after tax. And that's even before you know the true condition of the GB.

Actually - I just had a thought. Perhaps it would be a good business idea to ship in loads of VW manuals and their transfer boxes and make it a business here in KL.

just wanna share some infos.. there's 1 workshop in kemuning specialize for VW/Audi.. then this one day, one of mechanics were grinding engine head valves. so i ask him, what head are those. he said it was a Golf gti mk5 and he told me golf and audi's (not sure which model) are exactl the same. so if the engine are same, for sure the gb bolt holes are the same.. the workshop name is VagTec.

Why spin the air ? Spinning air provide a faster and cooler flow into your RAM pipe and Air Intake.

Steps.
1. Remove the fan
2. Cut off the middle part of the fan to create a round hole with blades attached
3. Use nail clipper, file the inside of the hole to make it smooth
4. Use nail clipper, trim the fan blades a bit (Especially if the blade is close to each other)
5. Stuff it in your RAM pipe. 3 inch.. should fit...
