The R8 is the sole member of Audi’s R car line up and the manufacturer seems to have developed quite an interest to expand it very soon. And according to the German media, what Audi has in mind will fill the gap between the TT and the R8, and will supposedly be called as the ‘R6’.

In a video published by Auto Bild detailing one of the stories in the next print edition, they talk about a mid-engined sportscar called the ‘R6’ and will supposedly be co-developed with Porsche. Since cars in the Volkswagen family are no strangers in sharing technologies among them, they said that Audi will use the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman chassis for this new mid-engine car.

However this is not the first time that someone had brought up the issue of another R car, but Auto Bild is confident that this is legit and the R6 even has an internal codename, PO455. Reports are saying that the R6 will likely borrow design elements seen on the Audi Sport Quattro that had made an appearance at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

While the concept was featured with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, the R6 name somehow hints that Audi will put in a V6 engine instead. But Porsche had recently switched their six-cylinder boxer engines to four-cylinder turbocharged units, so that should not be ruled out as one of the possibilities as well.
