If having a hand in saving the environment is one’s priority, it is unlikely for them to pick an SUV for the cause. That might soon change as Volvo had recently revealed the powertrain for their new XC90 which they will be equipping with turbochargers and hybrid technology.

The upcoming XC90 will be offered with a range of powertrains, with the top of the line being the T8 Twin Engine which is basically a four-cylinder engine that is both turbocharged and supercharged, and also gets an 80-horsepower electric motor. This gives the XC90 a total of 400-horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. Even with such power, this plug-in hybrid emits a CO2 emissions reading of 60g/km. That is simply better that the Toyota Prius with its 82g/km of emissions.

Also in the option list are two petrol and two diesel engines available for choice. The D5 diesel is a twin turbocharged unit that pushes out 225-horsepower while the smaller D4 has a single turbo making out 190-horsepower. As for the petrol counterparts, the four-cylinder T6 that is both supercharged and turbocharged gets 320-horsepower while the smaller T5 gets 254-horsepower.

Volvo’s move to combine a turbocharger and supercharger is aimed to eliminate any lag in the rev range, where the supercharger provides a push in the low rpms while the turbocharger kicks in at higher revs.
