Remember the fearsome 2008 DKR that Peugeot unveiled a few months back? While they kept a tight mouth on the specs of this fearsome Dakar racer, they are now ready to share with the world how are they going to conquer the punishing rally with this matte black monster.

Mounted in the middle of this mutated 2008 is a twin turbocharged V6 diesel engine that churns out 340-horsepower. But although they did say this is not going to be an all-wheel drive vehicle, Peugeot has yet to reveal whether the power will be concentrated to the front or the rear.

“When it comes to cross-country rallying, the biggest question is whether to run with four-wheel drive or just two. After a detailed study of the question, we decided to go two-wheel drive transmission which presents a number of interesting benefits,” said Peugeot Sport Director Bruno Famin.

With a two-wheel drive drivetrain, Peugeot could actually try to be the first team to win the Dakar Rally with a diesel-powered 2WD machine. The regulation states that two-wheel drive cars are entitled to be significantly lighter than 4x4s, and also the usage of bigger wheels which provides a certain advantage on challenging terrains.

“The 2008 DKR can practically climb vertical walls! And that’s not all, longer suspension travel – 460mm instead of 250mm – enhances its ability over dunes and when soaking up uneven ground. That’s a key asset on an event like the Dakar,” explained the technical project manager, Jean-Christophe Pallier.
