The BMW M3 Coupe has tasted countless success at the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), and even their 20-year absence could not stop the strong momentum of this machine charging towards the podium. But for the 2014 season, the M3 will no longer be BMW’s fighting machine as they are lining up the all new M4 Coupe to lead the assault.

The car is scheduled to make its first track appearance at the official ITR tests in Budapest (March 31 – April 3). BWM has been developing the M4 DTM for quite some time, but apparently it is not allowed to make modifications to fundamental areas of the cars as teams prepare for the season debut on May 4 at Hockenheim.

From the outside, the car may retain some of the production car’s styling cues, but the M4 DTM actually has very little in common with it. The car is fitted with a complex aerodynamic package which includes air curtains, air ducts, aerodynamically optimized wing mirrors and a massive rear wing. With the entire body made out of carbon fiber, this DTM racer only weighs 1,110kg including the driver.

Powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine with air restrictors, it has 480-horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, giving it a 0-100 time of about three seconds. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
