I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before – but the 911 GT3 series is my all time favourite speed machine. It is the essence of raw, unadulterated driving pleasure that one could experience on 4-wheels and it is a trait that I absolutely adore about the GT3; especially the RS variants. Of course, driving the GT3 will require more than just the ability to drive a stick-shift.
No doubt, the GT3 is more than just a regular 911 (if you could call it regular) – and it can be quite a handful to drive. It was designed to be more track-focused than a normal 911, hence it should be pushed to the limits on the circuit, where even an average joe can enjoy the brute. Pains me to say – I haven’t had the opportunity to drive one. So it grinds my gears when someone in Johannesburg, South Africa picked up the keys to a 997 GT3 Mk1 and decided to put it up against some fences.
The man visited a local dealership in Johannesburg and requested to go for a test drive with the beautiful machine. Things escalated quite quickly and according to some witnesses – the GT3 hit a massive bump on the road, causing the driver to lose control of the car and immediately spinning it up a palisade fence. As expected, speed was definitely in play and of course in a 415hp lightweight track-muncher – it isn’t that hard to achieve.
Damage was pretty massive – especially at the rear. The Porsche salesman was in absolute despair as the car was wrecked under his care. Question comes: who is going to pay for the damages? Well, likely the insurance company will but that doesn’t solve the headache of seeing a GT3 wrecked at the side of the street.
It hurts my eyes to see this wreck. Please – stop destroying 911 GT3s.
