We might have seen thousands of weird and amazing footages from Russian dashcams; which includes spectacular crashes, amazing escapes, and even a fighter jet flying at a ridiculously low altitude over the freeway. But all those are about to be overshadowed by what they have managed to record last week. Falling off from the skies with a blinding streak of light is, and we are not making this up, a meteorite.
Thanks to the never-ending love of the Russians towards this handy recording device, the meteorite could not have picked a better spot than the Chelyabinsk region in central Russia. But do not worry though as although the 10-tonne meteorite did quite some damage, there were no deaths reported. An estimated 500 people were injured, and most of them were due to the smashing windows caused by the tremors that the meteorite generated while travelling at 53,000km/h, and during the point where it exploded.
“I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day. I felt like I was blinded by headlights”, said Viktor Prokofiev, recalling his experience to Reuters.
Here are a couple more videos of the falling meteorite, probably could find more over the net but these would do. Could this falling space rock be a signal of an impending ice age anytime soon? Thankfully this was just a relatively “small” object compared to the DA14 that did a pretty close fly-by. With a mass of 190,000 tonnes, the damage will surely be far more catastrophic than this.
