Mercedes-Benz has been busy teasing the world lately – with interior shots and teaser videos on their ultimate sedan. And now, in the flesh (well, virtually), welcome everyone to the new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. It certainly looks the part for the next installation for hollywood’s blockbuster film, ‘The Transporter’ and at the same time leaves BMW and Audi aching for a rival to it.

The recipe is very simple, 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 with 585bhp and 900nm. 900! That’ll easily pull down a terrace house with one-eye closed. Zerotohundred – 4.4 seconds. As you can expect, the torque is so high that the power can’t be put to the ground; in fact, Mercedes is aware of it. So to cure the problem, just like the E63 and CLS 63 – a 4-matic AMG-S model is also available to tear even more of your internal organs. Zerotohundred – 4 seconds flat.

The boffins at AMG has focused to keep the weight down on the new W221 S63, and it paid off as it is 100kg lighter than the outgoing model. Although the total weight is still bonkers (at 2.2 tonnes) – it makes a lot of difference in performance, and at the same time, adds to an improved fuel efficiency. The weight shedding comes from extensive use of aluminium in the body panels, carbon-fibre spare tyre enclosure and carbon ceramic brakes. In fact, even the battery runs on lightweight lithium-ion.

The party piece with the new W222 S63 AMG is AMG’s new Sports Exhaust technology; specially fitted for the luxurious S-class mode. They call it the automatic logic- controlled exhaust – where practically, the two rear silencers are fitted with flaps that is controlled to fit the driving dynamics. In ‘C’ mode – the flap remains closed almost all the time, giving analytic levels of quietness which is perfect for long journeys. And when the moment is right, click to ‘S’ (sports) or ‘M’ (manual) and the flap will open early – giving the signature AMG V8 growl to fit a more energetic driving style.

Not forgetting that this is still a range-topping; class-leading S-class, performance is not the only focus with the W222. The interior has also taken a touch of AMG-styling; lavishly covered with an athletic atmosphere of a true AMG automobile. The newly designed AMG sports seats are in a class of its own, wrapped with fine nappa leather and finished with AMG badges – enlightening the inhabitants that it isn’t a regular S-class.

Carbon-fibre trimmings don’t come as standard but are highly recommended as it gives one the glow of performance. At the same time, the interior is also luxuriously presented with IWC Schaffhausen analog clock in the centre, giving it a touch of class and an old-skool AMG Affalterbach logo on the centre arm rest, which is a first.

We’ve never been as excited before about a luxury saloon – as they are never really that exciting. But this new S63 AMG redefines the class and no doubt that it looks the part. The exterior is subtle; delivering a sophisticated and finess outlook with AMGs’ typical perception. As an overall package, the car is utterly incredible.
