Report: Porsche Panamera Convertible In The Works

According to rumours posted online, Porsche is looking to produce a Panamera Convertible. That may not sound right as the Panamera is a four-door saloon but in the best interest of of keeping some semblance of chassis rigidity, Porsche is going with a two-door, four-seat convertible. Two doors will also help keep the weight down but there’s a nagging question, why a convertible Panamera?

Porsche Development Chief Wolfgang Duerheimer told Automobilwoche, “We have a broad range of 14 derivatives of the 911 that are very succesful, so it stands to reason we should diversify the lineup for the Panamera as well.”

But the chop may not end there, considering that Volkswagen now owns Porsche, the Panamera platform could be used for a number of other products like say the next Bentley Continental GT being built off a Porsche chassis instead of the Phaeton or A8. Or how about the Panamera chassis being used to build the Lamborghini Estoque. An unnamed VW board member recently commented, “the new Porsche Panamera offers the potential for synergies.” We’re just wondering though, what kind of synergies and how far will the Panamera chassis go?
