This is sad, this is really sad. Everytime I see or ride in our ‘official’ E46 M3 CSL, I secretly vow to own one someday but that is to be no more. A used E46 CSL just won’t work and by the time I could actually afford one, it’ll be obsolete. So news about BMW shelving its plans to create a new CSL kind of hit all the right or should I say wrong spots with my emotions.
BMW built 400 right hand drive examples of the BMW E46 M3 CSL and all were sold. However, according to Ludwig Willisch, the boss of BMWs M division, the current E92 M3 won’t be receiving the same treatment. He or perhaps BMWs accountants feel that based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the new M3 CSL.
The logic behind the dismissal of the E92 M3 CSL is that if a ‘go-faster’ version of the M3 is created, power would have to be hiked anywhere from 36 to 56 horsepower, weight would need to be shed by at least a 100kg or more, stickier tyres would be needed and of course the engine would need an array of oily bits to help it breathe easier. All this costs money, and in light of the possible low demand for it and to my horror BMW or again, its accountants would rather focus on the X6 and X5 for now.
The curse of the giant automaker strikes again, money above all, is what matters at the end. And all this while I thought it was the pursuit of the perfect driving machine.
